Could the Chiefs go 0-16?

Some seem to think it is a possibility.

Well, it’s not likely. But if I had to put my money on three possibilities, here are the leading contenders:

    Rebuilding: Kansas City Chiefs

Though Carl Peterson’s Chiefs have won seven or more games in four of the last five seasons and have been to the playoffs twice since 2003, the truth was inevitable after last year’s disastrous 4-12 campaign: It was time to rebuild.

more:

Long term, a widely praised draft class in which multiple picks will start right away is obviously fantastic news. Short term, having to rely on various rookies at key spots on the field is seldom a good thing even if the 2007 Giants did exactly that en route to a Super Bowl victory.

Rest assured, though, the 2008 Chiefs are not the 2007 Giants. There’s no Strahan or Pierce on this squad.

The two teams mentioned are the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins. I wouldn’t worry Chiefs fans.  I don’t think we will be going 0-16 any time soon.

Bowe on Croyle - He’s a little bit country…

I saw this over at Arrowhead Pride and thought I should share it here as well.

Funny quote from D-Bowe at the UWRF site:

After practice, Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe joked with reporters about rooming with quarterback Brodie Croyle. “Brodie is old school. I know he is young but he is the old school type.” Bowe went on to talk about how he is trying to get Croyle to like hip-hop music. When asked if he would listen to Croyle’s country music Bowe said, “I would listen to it. At the very least I would give it a shot and learn the lyrics.” He is still waiting for Croyle’s wife to mail them some country/rock music. Near the end of the interview, Bowe said that tomorrow night will be just a little preview of what to expect this upcoming year.

I think this is great to have our QB and top WR rooming together, they need to be on the same page as much as possible.

Jared Allen comes back… and oh yeah Vikings Scrimmage

jared allen vikings

So as many of you know tonight is the annual Chiefs/Vikings scrimmage.  That means that Benny Sapp-Attack and Jared Allen will be back on the Chiefs practice field… only wearing different colors.  A lot of people will see the Jared Allen/Branden Albert match up and then automatically makes assumptions.  I hope people don’t read into this too much.  Sure it is a great test for Albert to go against one of the best in the business, but no one will really know if the Chiefs made the right move by trading Allen for picks until a few years down the line. I would love to see Albert manhandle Allen, but realisticly it isn’t likely to happen.

Sometimes I still can’t belive Jared Allen isn’t a Chiefs anymore, I mean the guy was a beast and the fans loved him, but I do understand why the trade happen and in my opinion I think the trade will be good for both teams in the long run. I wish you the best Jared, but just not against us!

Here is a video of Jared Allen showing off his full beard and talking about playing against the Chiefs.

Anywho, the  srimmage is at 6:30 tonight and as soon as I find out details on what went down you will be the first to know!

John Lynch leaves Broncos

John Lynch apparently doesn’t like to play second fiddle. I have to admit I never really like Lynch that much but I could respect him for what he was. I’ll also admit that I don’t know the entire situation here, but to me it sounds like Lynch didn’t think he had to compete for “his” spot.

From ESPN

The 16-season veteran is leaving the Broncos, two sources close to the situation said, because he is unhappy with his role. He has been working with the first-team defense in the first week of training camp but not in nickel and dime defensive packages. He has admitted that not playing significantly bothered him.

Also in the article it says Lynch wants to explore ‘off the field’ options and that he has “aspirations to do television work after his playing days”. IF that happens I sure hope that for all of our sakes that he is better than Shannon Sharpe.

Chiefs Defense of 07

chiefs-training-camp-9

The Kansas City Chiefs defense held up rather well last season considering that they were on the field most of the game. Giving up almost three touchdowns a game is normally something to commend, but when you could count on a tired defensive unit playing close to 40 minutes a game, it is not so bad.

Bad was St. Louis. Tickets to Rams games saw opponents score nearly four touchdowns a game. The Rams offense was similarly dreadful last season and left the ill-equipped defense on the field to become the “greatest defense to run against on turf.”

No, the Chiefs were not too bad in reality. Unfortunately, in the short term, the defense is going to get worse. After facing a situation where Kansas City could not resign the key to the defense, the front office traded him, Jarad Allen, to the Minnesota Vikings for a first-round and two third-round draft picks.

The Chiefs sacrificed this season, one in which they were admittedly were not going to do much for the future. It was the right move. The team also lost Ty Law, but on a team building for the future, it made little sense to resign a 34-year-old cornerback.

In the meantime Patrick Surtain will take the top spot at corner and become the mentor to rookie Brandon Flowers. Flowers and safeties Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page form the future of the Kansas City secondary. First round draft pick Glenn Dorsey is expected to eventually become as big of a hassle as Allen was on the line and will play immediately in a rotation at defensive tackle with Ron Edwards and Alfonso Boone.

The defense might have a tough year this season at Arrowhead Stadium, with no chance to make the Super Bowl, and no chance to take the division away from the San Diego Chargers, but they will at least be a welcome change to the Royals or the prospect of having to watch the Cardinals.

The Scoring Drought of 2007

July 31, 2008 by bigknoxy · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Random

For the first time in years last season there was a drought in Missouri. It was uncomfortable. It was annoying. It was hazardous to our health. It was a massive scoring drought that went up and down Interstate 70 and effect people in St. Louis and Kansas City.

Yes football fans last year was the scoring drought that left two football teams without much hope. Kansas City Chiefs fans suffered under Herman Edwards, when they had previously thrived under Dick Vermeil. St. Louis fans used to Rams tickets to the “greatest show on turf” suffered as the scoring machine finally had a breakdown.

St. Louis sports fans at least had the St. Louis Cardinals to look forward to in the spring. Kansas City sports fans got to wait until another the team, the Royals could not score. The Rams are simply hoping they can keep the same pieces regroup and return to their show stopping ways.

The Kansas City Chiefs have taken a different approach, rebuilding. Fans at Arrowhead will not necessarily see a futile attempt at an NFL season though. The offensive line has been revamped, leaving only Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters back from last season. The rest of the unit is either untested (center Rudy Niswanger) or rookies (Branden Albert). Either way the line could not possibly be as bad as last season..

Last season the Chiefs allowed 55 sacks. That is 3.4 a game, 3.4 times the quarterback went down with countless other times the quarterback had to avoid pressure and make errant throws that went for incompletions or interceptions. Last year’s Chiefs tickets saw Damon Huard and Brodie Croyle struggle in futility to get the ball moving.

This season should not be so bad. Croyle is a young quarterback, specifically in his third year, and was drafted due to some kind of potential. Having more than three seconds to drop back and read the defense will do wonders for his development. He should also get more time because Larry Johnson is back from an injury plagued season.

Larry Johnson will receive a lot of attention after two previous seasons with over 1,700 yards. Croyle should be in charge of a much improved offense with perennial Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez and emerging receiving threat Dwayne Bowe. It would be nice if Croyle had a third option other than Johnson, but getting a whole new line was a mighty gift in itself.

The Chiefs will not reach the Super Bowl this season, but they will also not be as dreadful to watch this year. They may even be able to battle the Raiders or the Broncos for second or third place in the AFC West.

Training Camp Update Day 6 - 7/30 PM

chiefs-training-camp-9

The Chiefs seem to have got in a very solid practice today.
From kcchiefs.com

Plays of the Day: Defense ruled the morning practice, with a few notable exceptions. Rookie CB Brandon Flowers jumped an out route from QB Tyler Thigpen and returned it the length of the field for a score during Red Zone work. LB Donnie Edwards intercepted a crossing route in a play that would have resulted in a touchdown had it happened in a game.RB Jamaal Charles was a bright spot for the offense this morning. The rookie hauled in a screen from Huard, juked a defender and split the defense for a 65-yard touchdown.

Also appears some national coverage made its way to River Falls today

Notable Campers: ESPN NFL analyst John Clayton was in River Falls today. Clayton annually makes his rounds to a bevy of NFL training camps across the country. Also in camp was Jarrett Bell from USA Today, which touts some of the nation’s top NFL coverage.

Gretz: The kickers still seem to be neck and neck… .

Kickers Nick Novak and Connor Barth had a session and both ended up three-for-three. Novak made his kicks from 38, 43 and 50 yards. Barth nailed three-pointers from 36, 40 and 48 yards.

and a little more from Gretz

In 26 plays of team practice, the offense had eight positive results. Thigpen showed his mobility again, taking a couple of boots and turning them into runs. He also hit WR Bobby Sippio for a touchdown pass on a third-and-goal play. Kolby Smith had several nice runs. Defensively, LB Derrick Johnson made several plays as did DE Turk McBride.

Some more news from UW-RF; a Dorsey update and Gun being Gun. (Got to love it!)

During an 11-on-11 drill, defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey was having difficulties with his pads, so defensive end Turk McBride gave him a hand. When linebacker Pat Thomas failed on his coverage, allowing a pass to be completed to tight end Brad Cottam, Defensive Coordinator Gunther Cunningham said, “I’m gonna kill him. Hey Pat! There’s no excuse for that.” A nicely thrown ball to wide receiver Maurice Price was dropped when cornerback Rashad Barksdale applied good pressure. While the second and third strings worked, Defensive Line Coach Tim Krumrie worked with Dorsey on clubbing with his arms and getting by the blockers.

That concludes another day of camp. With every day that passes the games gets closer and closer… cant wait! :)

Training Camp Update Day 6 - 7/30 AM

chiefs-training-camp-11

I am getting to point where I am getting really anxious to see how the scrimmage against the Vikings turns out. Now, here is some of the highlights of this mornings practice, which will not include Bordie Croyle or LJ. Both of them sat out as the coaching staff decided they needed a rest.

Bob Gretz talks about roster for a second:

One roster note: the Chiefs had an open spot and with their shortage of defensive ends, they are bringing back Jonal Saint-Dic, a rookie free agent out of Michigan State.  He was released at the end of the team’s off-season program.

a small feud among the players

Things also got a bit chippy, as the boys are tired of hitting each other. DT Tank Tyler and G Tre Stallings went at it in the 9-on-7 drill. Later in the team work there was a good battle involving LB Pat Thomas, RT Damion McIntosh and Dorsey.

and a little about Gunther and the defense

Gunther Cunningham was upset with his linebackers. He gave Thomas, who is running with the first team at middle linebacker, an earful. He pulled rookie LB LeRue Rumph off the field at another spot. Once the action got flowing, Thomas made some plays, He stopped RB Jackie Battle for a 2-yard loss and then shut down a screen intended for RB Jamaal Charles. LB Donnie Edwards and CB Brandon Flowers had interceptions. S Jarrad Page dropped an INT.

Warpaint Illustrated had some good coverage as always. Here are their plays of the day.

    PLAYS OF THE DAY
Alfonso Boone might not be the quickest defensive end in the NFL, but he looked like one of the strongest on one play this morning. Brad Cottam was way out of his league trying to block Boone, who shoved the tight end yards deep into the backfield, and moved laterally to blow up a running play. Cottam had absolutely no chance.Tyron Brackenridge is fighting with Dimitri Patterson and a few other young players for spots on KC’s roster because the Chiefs drafted two cornerbacks last April. Today he showed up big time, smacking Dantrell Savage across the middle in 11-on-11’s with the second team. Brackenridge’s hit dislodged an ill-advised pass attempt intended for Savage.

Oliver Hoyte turned to face his quarterback and cleanly caught a short pass. As he turned around, Rashad Barksdale came screaming up to make a tackle, but there was one problem – he tried to tackle the 6-foot-2, 250-pound Hoyte high. Barksdale got flat run over.

Jamaal Charles carried out his play fake on the bootleg and paused at the line of scrimmage before turning upfield. He caught Tyler Thigpen’s pass cleanly, and needed only one block to find open field before he turned on the jets. There wasn’t a football player in Wisconsin who could have caught him.

and who they think is RED HOT:

Pat Thomas was simply all over the place this morning. In 11-on-11’s he penetrated to bring down a running back for a loss, and was part of a wrecking crew that blew up a screen pass. Later, Thomas pursued Tyler Thigpen on the bootleg and forced him out of bounds for a negligible gain. Finally, Thomas locked up on tight end Tony Gonzalez on another bootleg attempt, and stuck to him like glue before slapping away the ball. If you ask me, in one practice, Thomas showed up more than Napoleon Harris has all camp.Donnie Edwards is still an ageless wonder. He’s moving around like he’s in his prime, and today he made two plays on the football, tipping an interception to Brandon Flowers and snagging one of his own in the left flat.

The first-team defense really looks ready for the Vikings tomorrow night. They repeatedly stuffed running attempts early in practice and the secondary swarmed over receivers. There’s a reason Tyler Thigpen and Damon Huard had such a terrible morning practice.

Training Camp Update Day 5 - 7/29 PM

chiefs-training-camp-9

It seems like the Chiefs are really getting into the swing of things now.  That is a very good sign with the scrimmage against the Minnesota Vikings tomorrow. As usual I fill in excepts from the various training camp coverages.

From kcchiefs.com

Plays of the Day: Rookie RB Jamaal Charles took a handoff, cut to his right and blasted through a hole for a 75-yard score during the team run period. Coach Edwards had his offense positioned on its own 25-yard line to start the series when Charles went to the house.Coach Edwards set up the line of scrimmage 75 yards from paydirt and gave his charges 40 seconds to get into scoring range. QB Brodie Croyle led the first unit offense, hitting WR Devard Darling on a quick slant for a score.

Finally, QB Tyler Thigpen the second-unit offense during the two-minute period. The second-year signal caller from Coastal Carolina led the offense 50 yards down the field to the end zone. The series included a 25-yard scramble Thigpen and a 10-yard touchdown connection to rookie TE Brad Cottam to punctuate the drive.

Look Who’s Talking: “These last two practices – I know it, you know it, we got better“
-Head coach Herm Edwards addressing the team after practice

Here is little bit from Mr. Gretz. He seems to getting excited about the offense. (YES!) Hope it carries over.

And score one for the offense! Chan Gailey’s unit had their best practice of the training camp to date. One can almost see the light bulbs going off over the heads of some of the offensive players as they go from day-to-day. The basic Gailey offense is not very extensive and that’s all the team is working with right now. So they should get better at execution each practice because they’ve run these plays before.

and look who is running with the first team D.

Also, Pat Thomas was running with the first team at middle linebacker. Napoleon Harris ran with the second team. In the action, Demorrio Williams kept showing up and making plays. Jarrad Page was back in action after dinging his knee yesterday, but he dropped an interception.

I wouldn’t make too much of this at the moment, but if Thomas continues to run with the first team late into camp then you never know. As far as I am concerned if he is the best they put him out there.

Now a D Bo and Glenn Dorsey update from Warpaint Illustrated

WHO’S HOTDwayne Bowe simply keeps getting open and making plays. Today the second-year receiver was all over the place, and even when he didn’t catch the ball, he impressed. To start 11-on-11’s, Bowe toasted Patrick Surtain for what looked like a sure long touchdown, but Brodie Croyle overthrew the pass. Later, Bowe again victimized Surtain down the field despite tight coverage, going up to catch a purposefully underthrown ball from Croyle for a gain of about 25 yards. Bowe did drop a pass toward the end of the session, but he’s consistently showing up day in and day out. Now I’ve got to check out his blocking.

Glenn Dorsey is learning fast. Today, he was part of the reason KC’s first-team offense really struggled to run the ball, especially at the beginning of practice. On the second snap of 11-on-11’s, the rookie destroyed an attempt by Larry Johnson. Later, Dorsey blew past Brian Waters, ran down Johnson from behind in the backfield and despite quite an effort from the running back to break free, Dorsey would not let go and recorded a tackle for loss.

Glad to hear Dorsey is learning quick. Even if it was just once, if he is blowing past Brian Waters he is doing something right.

Ok, that’s all for now but don’t forget to check out UW-RF and Red Zone for some more coverage.

Chiefs Cornerback Brandon Carr Highlights

July 30, 2008 by bigknoxy · Leave a Comment
Filed under: KC Chiefs Football

I have been looking at my stats lately and have noticed that a few of you were looking for Brandon Carr highlights so I thought, why not make that a little easier for you by grouping a few things together in one area.
I really like this first video.

Some info from NFL.com

    Overview
Carr was a three-year starter and a two-year All-American for perennial Division II power Grand Valley State. He brought in 11 interceptions over the past three years and broke up another 37 passes during that time. He has a ways to go before competing for a starting or nickel back position, but his upside is high enough to warrant a late-round selection.High School
Prepped at Flint Carman-Ainsworth with current Lakers Todd Carter and Dan Skuta…First-Team All-Big 9 Conference performer as a senior DB…Caught 24 passes for 431 yards and four TDs as a WR, and tallied 53 tackles with two interceptions as a DB…Also participated in basketball.

    Analysis
Positives: Prototypical size for corner, tall with decent build and nice arm span. … Shows good hands for the interception and can high-point the ball. … Turns and runs with receivers well, showing good speed and the ability to maintain position. … Plays in the slot at times, but is best on the outside.

Negatives: A better athlete than football player. … Does not play as physically or aggressively as you’d like with his size. … He does not press much and is only adequate coming up in run support or getting off receiver blocks. … Marginal backpedal, and plays a bit high. … Rough transition against smaller, quicker receivers.

I think we all know a little more about Chiefs CB Brandon Carr now.
