Game DayThread - Game 12: Kansas City Chiefs Vs. Oakland Raiders

So here is game 12:

The Chiefs are 1-10 after their showing last week against the Bills and are hitting the road this week to play the Raiders.  This is a big game for both teams, as the Chiefs would like to WIN and so would the Raiders.  This game could also have great implications for the playoffs division race 2009 NFL Draft.

For the Chiefs to have a chance in this game one of the keys for them will be to make sure their running game gets on track early (LJ get back on track dude!)  and Thigpen needs to keep playing like he has been the last several weeks. This should be a decent game for Thigpen to “back on track” (don’t really think he got off track) after a tough matchup against the Bills last week. Good Luck Thiggy.

One thing I am worried about in this game is the Raiders rushing attack. These are the same guys who rushed for 300 yards against the Chiefs in the first meeting and the Chiefs are coming off of a game where they gave up 54 points (a franchise worst) to a Bills offense that is not potent to say the least.

(Slipping on the RED colored glasses) Looking at this from a positive perspective, if the Chiefs can get that running game going, cash in their red zone and TO opportunites, and the defense stops them every onnce in a while I think we have a shot here. The Chiefs MUST win the turnover battle and CASH IN on the TO’s they do create if they want to stand a chance. That’s a lot of “IFs”, but I like our chances this week against a Raiders team that is, well, the Raiders.

As always please post any comments, pictures, or whatever in the comment section below before, during or after the game. If you see something that you hated (or loved) let the rest of us know!

I’ll be yelling from my couch this week, hoping very much for a Chiefs victory.

Are You Immune to Chiefs losses?

In one of my many car rides to and from sporting events recently we were discussing how used to Chiefs losses we all have become. Even when I was online a week or so ago one of my friends changed his Facebook status to “immune to Chiefs losses”.

I know everyone reacts to situations differently, but I used to be TICKED when the Chiefs lost a game. Some weeks, if it was a BAD loss, I would be mad the whole day on Monday. Now, it probably takes about 1 minute (hopefully that’s NOT what she said… Lol…) to recover.

Seriously when did this happen? I guess this is what happens when your favorite team has been losers in 19 of its last 20 games.

What do you think?   Should we be taking these losses harder than we do? Or is this just what we should expect now?

Changes to KC Chiefs Football.com blog

Hey all,
I just wanted to let you all know that I have made a few changes to this site. Some are obvious and others are not.

New Theme: This one is of course obvious. So, what do you all think? Do you like the new theme? Did you like the old one better? Do you not care at all? I like the “clean-ness” of the new theme, but that is just my opinion and I’d like to hear what the rest of you have to say.

Behind the Scene Changes: I have had a few complaints about the time it takes to load this site so I made some changes that won’t be able to physically see, but should make a difference to you.  So I cleaned up some stuff removed some unused scripts, did some testing and BAM!  The site appears to be loading much quicker than before for most. Let me know if you see a difference, the LAST thing I want is people turning away because they don’t want to wait for the site to load ( I Know how frustrating this can be, I, myself, am a very impatient person when it comes to website loading time)

Well, that’s all for this post, I just wanted to keep the community informed of the changes that are taking place here. As always, let me know if you have any comments and/or sugguests.

Monday Morning Thoughts…

Monday Morning Thoughts

Happy Turkey week Monday y’all…

The Chiefs managed to find a way to score 31 points in a game and still get blown out… how does this crap happen? While I am happy with the progress of the offense the defense is just flat out horrible right now. I thought yesterday’s game was suppose to be a step back in the right direction since the Chiefs were getting a lot of their injured players back… obviously I was DEAD WRONG.

Tyler Thigpen: He had a couple picks which lead directly to Bill’s scoring drives, but also had three TD passes.  We all knew he would do this is some game soon, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Thigpen didn’t let the INTs get to him and came back out to let the Chiefs down the field for some more scores. I think that is important thing for a young QB to have. Thigpen should be just fine.

Gunther Cunningham: If you have been reading my blog you know that I have been talking about the Gunther situations for a while.  Some of you questioned it, but I am just curious how you feel about it a month later while getting the same, if not worse results. The Chiefs gave up a franchise worst 54 points to the BILLS! The Bills also were allowed to gain 444 yards.  Like most others I am having a hard time finding a scenario where Gunther will be back for next season.

Is it a coincidence that as I am typing this that Leona Lewis’s “It’ll all get better in time” is playing on the radio??  I sure hope she is right…

Now some news about this site:

As I’m sure you have noticed by now (since you are here reading this) I have changed the theme here at KC Chiefs Football Blog. What do you guys think?   Do you like the change? Do you like the old one better?

Also, one of the things I was trying to do was to improve the loading time of the site. So I made a few adjustments so hopefully the site loads a little faster for you now. This seems to be a really weird problem as only some people seem to have this problem. Either way I would really like your feedback so I know where to go from here. (Leave a comment on this page or you can hit up through the contact page).

Well, that’s all for this Monday. Hope you guys have a great Turkey week!

Go Chiefs!

Game DayThread - Game 11: Kansas City Chiefs vs Buffalo Bills

So here is game 11:

The Chiefs are 1-9 after putting up a (semi)decent showing last week against the Saints and are at home again this week to play the Bills.  This is a big game for both teams, as the Chiefs STILL need a WIN and the Bills are trying to stop thier four game losing streak.

For the Chiefs to have a chance in the game one of the keys for the Chiefs will be to make sure their running game gets on track early (LJ get back on track dude!)  and Thigpen needs to just not lose the game for the Chiefs (another showing like last four weeks would be GREAT Thiggy). This should be the hardest test for Thigpen so far as the Bills are the 13th overall defense and also ranked 13th against the pass. Good Luck Thiggy.

One thing I am worried about in this game is Bills RB Marshawn Lynch. He is a big back who could tire you down as the game goes on and end up breaking a  long one on you late in the game. For the Chiefs sake they need to play tough run defense (haven’t allowed 100 yards rushing the last two weeks) and not allow the big play like they were doing in earlier weeks.

Looking at this from a positive perspective, if the Chiefs can get that running game going, cash in their red zone and TO opportunites, and the defense stops them every onnce in a while I think we have a shot here. The Chiefs MUST win the turnover battle and cash in on the TO’s they do create if they want to stand a chance. That’s a lot of “IFs”, but I like our chances this week against a Bills team strugling to find themselve. Please dont let this be the week!

As always please post any comments, pictures, or whatever in the comment section below before, during or after the game. If you see something that you hated (or loved) let the rest of us know!

I’ll be yelling from my season seat ar Arrowhead this week, hoping very much for a Chiefs victory.

Chiefs vs Bills: Matchups to watch

November 22, 2008 by bigknoxy · Leave a Comment
Filed under: KC Chiefs Football

Here are some matchups from the upcoming Chiefs/Bills game at Arrowhead that I think will be important when determining the outcome of the game (or if nothing else they will be fun to watch!)

Marshawn Lynch vs Chiefs Rush Defense: Marshawn Lynch hasn’t been the back that a lot of people thought that he would be this year but he is facing a Chiefs defense that is #31 against run. Yes, that is #31 (not 32) because they have actually held their last two opponents to under 100 yards rushing.

Chiefs Pass Offense vs Bills Secondary: The Bills secondary will be “spread thin” this week aginst the Chiefs new offense.  This could be good news for the Chiefs and maybe they can turn a few of those FG’s into TD’s this week. PUNCH IT IN GUYS!

Larry Johnson vs Bill Rush Defense: Can LJ get back to the LJ of old?  He showed spurts last week aginst the Saints but the Bill will be a much tougher test for him. Also, LJ appears to be a little rusty, like maybe he is picking some wroing holes to run (check this out)

Trent Edwards vs Chiefs Secondary: Trent Edwards apprears to have no confidence right now and if the Chiefs want to stand a chance they need to keep it that way. Some QB presure would REALLy help in that area.  It’s possible the Chiefs could return a few key members of it’s secondary this week (such as Branden Flowers) that will do nothing but help the Chiefs. The Chiefs secondary has been getting lots of INTs recently and look for that to continue here.

Chiefs Special Teams vs Bills Special Teams: The Chiefs have been playing average at best special teams as of late, and really need punter Dustin Colquitt to return to his old self (that would really help in the field position battle). The Bills are know to get good special teams play and for the Chiefs to win this battle they will need their ‘A’ game.

Well, there you go. If the Chiefs can win most or all of these battles then they should stand a great chance to win this game. Go Chiefs!

Middle-ish week update

I know I really haven’t said much since Monday so I thought I would try to catch up.  (BTW I have been working on tryng to get this site to load faster, does anyone else have problems with loading time here? PLEASE let me know if youd do)

First off, I wanted to congradulate Arrowhead Pride for first off putting together this great post on the Chiefs (in)ability to draft defensive players over the last SEVEN YEARS, and secondly for having Dr. Z @ Sports Illistrated take notice. Great work Chris and to the creator of this post ‘DThomasReigns’.

Roster Moves This Week:

Dantrell Savage has been released so apparenlty the Chiefs are happy (enough) with K-Rob returning kicks and punts… for now at least.

The Chiefs have added LB Curtis Gatewood and DE Andy Studebaker.

Gatewood (6-2, 248) signed with Washington as a rookie free agent out of Vanderbilt in 2008. He appeared in three preseason contests with the Redskins before being released. He has spent nine weeks on Washington’s practice squad this season. The Memphis, Tennessee native played in 47 games (24 starts) and tallied 110 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks in his four-year career at Vanderbilt. Gatewood was a Class 5A first team all-region selection and defensive MVP as a prep at White Station High School in Memphis, Tennessee.

Studebaker (6-3, 248) was the third of Philadelphia’s three sixth-round draft choices (203rd overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft. The Wheaton College (IL) product spent the last 11 weeks on Philadelphia’s practice squad. He appeared in all four of the Eagles preseason tilts and, but was released prior to the start of the regular season.

The Congreville, Illinois native was a NCAA Division III All-America selection at Wheaton College and tallied an NCAA-best 17.5 sacks during his junior season. He finished his career after playing in 28 games (23 starts) and registering 111 tackles, 30.0 sacks, four fumble recoveries, 14 passes defensed and 25 QB pressures. Studebaker prepped at Eureka High School where he was an all-conference tight end and defensive end.

The Chiefs also promoted Jackie Battle from the practice squad to the 53 man roster and added DT Antwon Burton to the practice squad.

Burton (6-2, 308) has seen duty in seven NFL contests over the last two seasons with Denver, tallying nine tackles (five solo). He originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Denver in 2006, spending time on the Broncos practice squad before joining the 53-man roster for the final eight games of the 2006 season. Burton saw his most extensive NFL action a season ago, appearing in six contests and registering eight tackles (five solo) before spending the final seven weeks of 2007 on Denver’s developmental squad. He attended training camp with Cincinnati in 2008, but was released prior to the start of the regular season.

As a Chiefs fan we all remember DT and what he meant to this team. Now, his son, Derrion, is making a name for himself in the Kansas City High School ranks, becoming quite an unstoppable force. Bob Gretz did a great article about it and it is a MUST read.

That’s all for now, have a great day Chiefs fans!

Monday Morning Thoughts…

November 17, 2008 by bigknoxy · Leave a Comment

Happy Monday everyone…

This game was exciting for a while but still ended with the Chiefs losing to the Saints 30-20. This one was over much earlier than in previous weeks.

(I’m gonna sing at least one more time) “Gettin’ Thiggy with it, nah-nah nah nah nah-nah nah!” Tyler Thigpen played another good game yesterday. Thigpen did have the one late INT but when its fourth down you have to try to make a play because you are going to give the ball back anyway, so I don’t really blame him too much for that one (although I wish he could have got more on it as Bowe did have the CB beat). He gave the Chiefs a chance to win and that is all you can really ask for.

Chiefs QB Situation: I’m getting a Thigpen jersey!!  Okay, maybe not (yet) but so far each new game has helped Thigpen raise his chances to be the Chiefs answer at QB, at least for next year. The rest of the year will tell…

BTW I did actually see a guy with a Thigpen jersey on at the game yesterday, he jumped on early, I hope it was for the right reasons.

BIG PROBLEM FOR THE CHIEFS: Pass rush. The Chiefs need to figure out how to get some pressure on the QB. If they don’t pressure on the QB it doesn’t matter how good out two “Brandon’s” are because even the best corners can’t cover someone forever. Right now a pass rushing DE looks like it would be a great choice with our first pick next year. (Right now I’m still sticking with DE or MLB)

Now some news about this site:

For now we are putting the Brick Hits Podcast on hold. This doesn’t mean they are gone forever (unless you want them to be) but for now it is “taking a break and seeing other people”.  I am trying to get Brick to do a weekly article for us here so maybe I can get him going on that this week.

Well, that is all for this Monday morning. I hope you all have a great week and that we can see a Chiefs victory next Sunday.

Go Chiefs!

Game DayThread - Game 10: Kansas City Chiefs vs New Orleans Saints

November 16, 2008 by bigknoxy · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Game Day Threads

So here is game 10:

The Chiefs are 1-8 after putting up a respectable showing last week against the Bolts and are back at home to play the Saints.  This is a big game for both teams, as the Chiefs need a WIN and the Saints are trying to keep pace with all of the other teams in their division.

For the Chiefs to have a chance in the game one of the keys for the Chiefs will be to make sure their running game gets on track early (LJ comng back determined would be a great asset for the Chiefs about now)  and Thigpen needs to just not lose the game for the Chiefs (another showing like last week would be GREAT Thiggy). This should be possible since the Saints are ranked in the lower third of the league against the pass and have injured CB’s. Good Luck Thiggy.

One thing I am worried about in this game is the Saints ability to gian yards in bunches and put up points with the quickness. You know they like to throw the ball with Brees and I just hope that the banged up CHiefs defense can put up a strong showing.

Looking at this from a positive (and HOMER-ISH) perspective, if the Chiefs can get that running game going (WITH Larry Johnson, FINALLY) and the defense stops them every onnce in a while and creates some turnovers (like last week) I think we have a shot here. The Chiefs MUST win the turnover battle and cash in on the TO’s they do create if they want to stand a chance. That’s a lot of “IFs”, but I like our chances.

As always please post any comments, pictures, or whatever in the comment section below before, during or after the game. If you see something that you hated (or loved) let the rest of us know!

Reggie Bush won’t play this Sunday

November 14, 2008 by bigknoxy · Leave a Comment
Filed under: News

I don’t wish injury on anyone, but this is great news for the Kansas City Chiefs!  Red Zone is reporting that Reggie Bush will not play this Sunday when the Chiefs take on the Saints at Arrowhead.

The Saints had been hinting all week that Reggie Bush would return from his knee injury to play against the Chiefs Sunday, but New Orleans declared him out on its injury report.

The Saints also said three other starters (cornerback Aaron Glenn, center Jonathan Goodwin and fullback Mike Karney) also wouldn’t play because of injuries.

Officially the Chiefs are listing Tamba Hali, Pat Thomas, Derrick Johnson, Adrian Jones, Brandon Flowers and Patrick Surtain as questionable even though coach Herm Edwards said they would not play.

The Chiefs seem to have more problems with Reggie Bush type runners (than they do with bigger backs) it seems so this just makes me get my hopes up. :) The Saints have injuries in their secondary, Thiggy is playing great and now no Reggie Bush to deal with… Oh yeah, Drew Brees is still there.. huh…

Go Chiefs!
