With their season over, the Kansas City Chiefs are looking forward to the 2011 season.

The team has re-signed seven practice squad players to future contracts, a source confirmed. The team has not announced the moves, but the players signed their deals on Tuesday.

WR Jeremy Horne; TE Cody Slate; G Darryl Harris; DL Bobby Greenwood; LB Pierre Walters; LB Micah Johnson; and LB Justin Cole all signed deals for next season.

OLB Dion Gales is the only one out of Kansas City’s eight practice squad players not to re-sign as of Wednesday morning.

What do you think Chiefs fans? There is also talk that he’s a QB guru, so he could help Cassel.

RT @kentbabb: This is as strong as you’ll see it put: If Mike McCoy wants to be the Chiefs’ OC, he probably will be.

Bombshell…Dwayne Bowe suspended 4 games effective immediately - violates NFL performance enhancing drugs policy

This was just reported on Chiefs Live, live on kcchiefs.com right now.

Well, this is big news.   The Chiefs chances to win these next few games just took a big hit in my opinion. What does this mean for the Chiefs now?

Chiefs release Larry Johnson - KansasCity.com

All I have to say is this doesn’t hurt my feelings…

Chiefs release Larry Johnson - KansasCity.com.

The Chiefs released running back Larry Johnson on Monday, his first day back from a two-week suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

Johnson called out coach Todd Haley two weeks ago in a Twitter post before using a pair of gay slurs on his Twitter profile and, a day later, to a group of reporters. He missed Sunday’s game at Jacksonville, and the suspension cost him about $330,000.

AFC Conference Predictions

September 10, 2009 by bigknoxy · 2 Comments
Filed under: KC Chiefs Football, Predictions

I am normally more of a ‘wait and see’ kind of guy, but I figured what the heck, everyone else is doing it…  So here are my predictions for the entire AFC.

AFC East

1. Patriots
The Patriots are still the Patriots. Tom Brady is back from injury, Bellicheck is still the coach, and can anyone give me a legit reason why the Pats won’t win the East? (barring injuries)

2. Dolphins
The Fins are really hard to pick this year. It seems like most surprise teams usually have a down year the next but to be honest I don’t see much difference between the Dolphins, Jets and Bills, as all have similar talent. I think second place in the East will probably come down to the division games and possible even a big play or two in those games.  In my mind the Dolphins are more likely to convert those big plays (slightly).

3. Jets
Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco made rookie QB’s look good last year and we all know that is not the norm. I don’t think Mark Sanchez will do bad but I don’t think he will do that good either, but he does have enough talent around him (offensive line and rushing attack) to hover around 8-8 (give or take).

4. Bills
The Bills (similar to the Chiefs) fired their OC during the preseason and will now rely on the head coach to call the plays and I for one don’t really like this idea.  I would look for the Bills to make or break their season in the early on. If they lose a few close games early on things could start to turn ugly (esp with T.O. on board) but that door swings both ways, a few good wins at the beginning of the year and this team could challenge for number two in the East.

AFC North

1. Steelers

The Super Bowl champs are one of the most offensively and defensively balanced teams in the NFL and that is the reason I picked them to win the North over Baltimore. What I mean by that is the  Steelers can beat you with offense, defense, or even special teams.

2. Ravens

The Ravens defense is still VERY good and can be downright nasty at times but I am still not convinced that they could win a game with their offense if they needed to, which is why I gave the North to the Steelers.  The Ravens should still be a lock for the playoffs.

3. Bengals

I would love to see Carson Palmer have a great bounce back year but I am not convinced that the Bengals offensive line could support this.

4. Browns

When the Browns stop being the Browns someone please let me know.

AFC South

1. Colts

The Colts may have lost a HOF coach in Tony Dungy along with WR Marvin Harrison but new head coach Jim Caldwell has worked with Peyton Manning for what, 20 years? Seriously Peyton Manning is still the QB of this team and we all know this is a QB driven league.  I wouldn’t worry too much about Harrison either as the Colts have shown time and time again they know the right time to let a player go.  My only concern with this team is how much Dungy leaving will effect the defense, but either way they still have enough in them to win the division.

2. Titans

The Titans remind me a lot of the Ravens, they will beat you with their defense. If it comes down to it do you trust Kerry Collins to carry your team? Although with with the Titans rushing offense you may not have to worry about Collins.

3. Texans

Why all the hype surrounding the Texans this season? I don’t see how they have improved enough to beat out the Titans and Colts for tops in the South as many are predicting.  Yes they are a very talented team on both offense and defense but for the last few years the Texans have been the trendy pick and until they prove otherwise I will keep them below the Colts and Titans.

4. Jaguars

The Jags…  I am not sure what to say about them. They are obviously not happy with their QB play as they have been linked to many of this off season’s QB talks but unable to upgrade at the position. Sorry Jags, this just isn’t your year.

AFC West

1. Chargers

If the Chargers don’t win the West it isn’t because of lack of talent.  LT is looking to make a return to the top tier of running backs, but even if he doesn’t they still have have Darren Sproles. Phillip Rivers is bound to have a little bit of a let down this year after a superb 2008 but even a small let down would still be a great year. The best thing going for the Chargers is that they play in the West as no one really has any expectations for the Chiefs, Raiders and Broncos.

2. Chiefs

Of course I have a little bit of a bias toward the Chiefs (I mean I do run a Chiefs blog) but I feel that the Chiefs are in better shape than both the Raiders and the Broncos. The right leadership is in place I just don’t know if the turn around will happen this quick, plus the Chiefs have a pretty brutal looking schedule this season.

3. Raiders

The head coach is punching his assistants, they are trading 1st round picks for 30-something year old linemen and Al Davis is still in charge…  and they still aren’t in quite as bad shape as the Broncos.

4. Broncos

I have never seen a head coach tear apart a team and become so disliked (to put nicely) as quickly as Josh McDaniels has in Denver. Kyle Orton is your QB, your best offensive player acts like a preschooler, and your defense still sucks.  It’s going to be a long year.

Chiefs Training Camp Update: 8-1-09 AM

August 1, 2009 by bigknoxy · 3 Comments

I don’t know about you but I am very excited today!  Today is the first day of training camp for our 2009-2010 Kansas City Chiefs!  WooHoo!  Ok, now that we got that out of the way here are some updates from around the web about this mornings practice.

(Picture from Josh Looney via Twitter)

Dwayne Bowe and Bobby Engram

Speaking of Josh Looney’s Twitter here are some of his tweets regarding the AM practice:

  • Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson two of the first on the field
  • Still easy to spot LJ…those long red socks at practice are a signature…follow the blog for detailed practice reports
  • http://twitpic.com/cdnpp - View from the top (picture)
  • The pace of practice is drastically different from past chiefs camps…action everywhere
  • Fans in river falls are loving the “new chiefs”
  • LJ got the offense fired up after a TD over the left gl pylon…Practice complete & waiting for coach to talk
  • “that’s one day of semi-controlled chaos.” - Todd Haley

Another great resource for Chiefs Training Camp info is CBS Sports. This season they have a ‘play tracker’ for training camp and rumor has it that Bob Gretz is doing the updates (so you know it’s good)

  • Veteran Chiefs WR Bobby Engram raved about working with QB Matt Cassel. “He puts the ball in great positions for you to catch and it comes with a tight spiral,” Engram said.
  • Chiefs coach Todd Haley is pleased with the first practice performance of QB Matt Cassel. “He’s just what he has been and I would say that he had a fairly solid start,” Haley said. “You’re going to get great enthusiasm from him, and you’re probably going to have to tell him five or six times to be quiet because he’s so excited.”
  • Chiefs RB Larry Johnson revealed that he’s down more than 10 pounds from the weight he’s played his whole career at, dropping from 235 to 223. “It’s something Coach (Todd) Haley asked me to do and I feel faster,” said Johnson. “I don’t think I’ve lost any power.”
  • The Chiefs safeties spent extra practice time working with assistant coach Ronnie Bradford on walking that fine line between dropping into coverage and run support.
  • Chiefs coach Todd Haley said he was not concerned that three-fifths of his starting offensive line wasn’t able to practice Saturday morning. “If this were long term, we might be worried, but I don’t think anything will be a long term deal with any of those players,” Haley said of LG Brian Waters, RG Mike Goff and RT Damion McIntosh.
  • In a live goal line drill, RB Larry Johnson beat LB Zach Thomas to the pylon on a nice TD run.

And Let’s not forgot the UW-RF Staff, they always put out some great updates for us as well. Here are some tidbits from them:

  • Rookie defensive end Alex Magee was getting his fair share of praise from Defensive Line Coach Tim Krumrie. At one point Krumrie told the end from Purdue that he was doing a good job. “There ya go. Good, Alex, good,” Krumrie said.
  • The group ran different routes amongst the four dummies to simulate different situations in which the defensive linemen would have to break through offensive blockers to reach the quarterback. In order to be successful at the drill, Krumrie told the players to keep their “feet underneath them. Feet, feet, feet!” During one of the routes, Krumrie stood really close to the third dummy and hollered, “Step, step, club!” as the men ran by.
  • During a 7-on-7 drill, utilizing the offense’s running game, defensive end Alfonso Boone, defensive tackle Tank Tyler and linebackers Tamba Hali, Mike Vrabel, Monty Beisel and Zach Thomas all saw time with the first-string. Rounding out the 7-on-7 first-string was rookie defensive end Alex Magee.
  • Later, during a 7-on-7 drill addressing the passing game, cornerbacks Brandon Carr, Maurice Leggett, and Brandon Flowers; safeties Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page; and linebackers Tamba Hali, Monty Beisel, Mike Vrabel and Zach Thomas were considered first-string.
  • When the rest of the team went to work on the kicking game, the quarterbacks were left to work by themselves. Two poles that hung four different colored targets were placed in each corner of the endzone. The quarterbacks took turns trying to hit the different targets. Quarterback Tyler Thigpen was the first one to hit a target. Newly acquired quarterback Matt Cassel followed that up with one of his own in the left corner. Every time Cassel hit the target, he followed it up with excited yells while throwing his hands in the air.
  • Quarterback Matt Cassel completed his first six passes in the team’s 7-on-7 drill. Three of those passes were perfectly-timed sideline hitch routes to wide receiver Dwayne Bowe. Cassel came back and completed three more passes before the drill’s completion. He ended up finishing 9-9
  • Quarterback Matt Cassel was the first quarterback to run the team’s 7-on-7 drill. His first pass was a completed pass to running back Larry Johnson behind the line of scrimmage. This received some heat from linebacker Mike Vrabel. Vrabel yelled across the field, “You’re one-for-one on check downs! They don’t throw check downs in Foxborough! No check downs for Tom!”
  • Receiver Bobby Engram was at his 14th NFL Training Camp and his first in River Falls. Engram signed in the off-season with the Chiefs after 13 years in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears. Engram told reporters that he has “a lot of gas left in the tank.” He made it known that he is here to compete for a job and help the Chiefs win football games, not just to be a mentor for the Chiefs young receivers

Chiefs Injuries:
The Chiefs have placed three players on the PUP list: DE Glenn Dorsey, RB Kolby Smith and TE Jake O’Connell. I am being told that the only ‘real worry’ (read risk of missing actual games) on this list is Kolby Smith.
The Chiefs also placed six players on the NFI List: RT Damion McIntosh, RG Mike Goff, LG Brian Waters, LB Demorrio Williams, DT Ron Edwards and DE Dion Gales.

The next practice is today from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. (I will be trying to get one of these out for every practice)

So there you have it Chiefs fans. Are you as excited about ‘real football’ as I am?

Chiefs sign veteran safety Mike Brown

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed former Bears safety Mike Brown.

Chiefs pick up veteran safety Mike Brown - Kansas City Star.

I think this is a good move. Scott Pioli is upgrading the talent at every position and creating competition. Bringing in the 31 year old safety should be good for Jarrad Page and Bernard Pollard.

Here are Mike Brown’s career stats: (via nfl.com)

Season Team Tackles Interceptions Fumbles
G GS Total Solo Ast Sck SFTY PDef Int Yds Avg Lng TDs FUM Lost
2008 Chicago Bears 15 15 73 57 16 1.0 8 2 0 0.0 0 0

TOTAL 415 341 74 5.0 0 30 17 275 72 4 0 0

Although durability is probably Brown’s biggest issue, now the Chiefs have three starting caliber safties.  You can never have too much talent, right?
