- Chiefs LT Branden Albert on the return of guards Brian Waters and Mike Goff to practice: “It was great having the two wisemen back.”
- Chiefs coach Todd Haley on why he spent extra time in Sunday’s practice with the team’s wide receivers: “We’ve had guys on the ground and the receiver is no good to anyone if he’s laying on the ground. Whether it’s the right shoes, improper technique, whatever, a wide receiver cannot be on the ground and help you win in any way, shape or form.”
From UW-RF Staff
- Before practice officially began, Defensive Coordinator Clancy Pendergast was working with the defensive backs, running a drill that used five garbage bins to simulate the offensive line. During this drill, cornerback Maurice Leggett was seeing time as the nickelback.
- One of the defensive coach stood on the back of the single sled while the defensive linemen worked on tackling. Defensive Line Coach Tim Krumrie continued to ask the men to “jam it” and “keep [their] head up.” Krumrie made defensive tackle Tank Tyler hit the dummy multiple times until he was satisfied with Tyler’s “jamming.”
- Seeing time with the first-string during 7-on-7 was: defensive ends Alfonso Boone and rookie Alex Magee, defensive tackle Ron Edwards and linebackers Monty Beisel, Zach Thomas, Tamba Hali and Mike Vrabel.
- Frustrated due to the defense’s weak showing versus the running offense during 7-on-7, Defensive Line Coach Tim Krumrie shouted, “Don’t let him push your (butt) off the ball. You push him past the line of scrimmage!”
- 11-on-11 began. Seeing time with the first-string was: linebackers Tamba Hali, Zach Thomas, Mike Vrabel and Monty Beisel; cornerbacks Brandon Carr and Brandon Flowers, safetiesBernard Pollard and Jarrad Page, defensive ends Alex Magee and Alfonso Boone and defensive tackle Ron Edwards.
- After quarterback Matt Cassel completed a pass to wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, Defensive Coordinator Clancy Pendergast said he expected more out of linebacker Tamba Hali. “Finish, Tamba,” he shouted.
- Running back Kolby Smith, tight end Jake O’Connell and tackle Damion McIntosh were not suited up for practice this afternoon. GuardsBrian Waters and Mike Goff were both in full pads for the first time today.
- Off a good handoff from quarterback Tyler Thigpen during 7-on-7, running back Jackie Battle fumbled the football. This was much to the dismay of Offensive Line Coach Bill Muir.
- Running back Dantrell Savage had a good run off a handoff from quarterback Matt Cassel during 7-on-7
- Head Coach Todd Haley was getting on quarterback Matt Cassel for his play-action fake during a half-speed scrimmage against the offensive reserves. “[We need a] good sell, good sell! If we are going to run those, Matt, we need a good sell!”
- Quarterback Tyler Thigpen looked really sharp in his 7-on-7 session. Thigpen was 6-6 on the day.
- Chiefs President Denny Thum was present at this afternoon’s practice.
So there you have it Chiefs fans. Stay tuned, more updates are coming.

Updates from Mitch Holthus
- Am I one of the few that Bernard Pollard could be a Larry Izzo type Pro Bowl special teams guy? He showed some signs again today.
- Whoops Jamaal Charles fumbles and EVerYBODY runs…every coach talks about turnover margin…others make it a way of life
- Hilites of session 2. RBs v LBs on pass pro. LBs have advantage but u find out who wants to play football. Javarris Williams didn’t blink.
- Also OL v DL pass pro. Liked Eric Guy check…we need depth on OL and he might be a G-C-G guy that every team needs.
Updates from Bob Gretz @ CBS Sports
- DE Tyson Jackson is missing his second camp practice as contract negotiations continue. Chiefs GM Scott Pioli had no comment on the status of the talks
- As the Chiefs worked on their punting game, WRs Rodney Wright and Quinten Lawrence handled returns. Neither has returned a punt in a regular or pre-season game.
- Chiefs RBs struggled in a pass-protection drill trying to block blitzing LBs.
- In a 7-on-7 Chiefs passing drill, Matt Cassel was 7 of 9 with an INT, Brodie Croyle was 3 of 9 with an INT and Tyler Thigpen was 5 of 6.
- CB Brandon Flowers made two big plays in Chiefs team work, blitzing the QB for a sack and knocking down a pass to WR Dwayne Bowe.
- Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe says the addition of veteran WR Bobby Engram has been a big help to him. “That’s my roommate, and I’m learning from him every day,” said Bowe. “He’s taught me things about watching tape, catching the ball, how to practice, how to prepare.”
- Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe said he’s down to 210 pounds, which is 12 to 15 pounds lighter than last year.” I just feel better,” he said. “I feel like I can run faster and jump higher.”
And lastely but definitly not least, updates from the UW-RF Staff:
- Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe had the first dropped ball of the day in an 11-0 drill. It turned out to be a trend for the remainder of practice. Tight end Brad Cottam had two drops in a row when running routes against air about 20 minutes later. Rookie wide receiver Quinten Lawerence had a drop in one-on-one drills. Wide receiver Mark Bradley had a drop in the 7-on-7 drills. Head Coach Todd Haley had commented earlier in the day that he had seen too many drops in the morning session.
- During a drill involving both offensive and defensive linemen, center Eric Ghiaciuc pushed defensive tackle Tank Tyler over. The crowd, including both offensive and defensive players, let out some “oooh’s” after the play. Ghiaciuc offered to help Tyler up, but Tyler declined the hand and sprinted back to complete the drill. The offfensive line was looking strong again when tackle Cameron Goldberg knocked linebacker Tamba Hali over pretty handedly. Hali got back up and continued to battle toward the “quarterback.”
- During the individual position split, the tight ends were working on some blocking. When Brad Cottam got over-extended, trying to make a block, Tight End Coach Bob Bicknell made a crack about Cottam’s height. “I know it’s hard for you. You are tall. You are, like, 11-feet tall.” Cottam is listed at 6’7”.
- In an interview after practice, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe stated that the offense was making some great improvements in practice. According to Bowe, quarterback Matt Cassel is “a great leader. He doesn’t let anybody fail. If you fall down, he is right there to pick you back up.”
- During the afternoon practice, (Derrick) Johnson was not suited up; he was wearing a pair of grey sweatpants with his jersey. He worked out with the other players not suited up during practice. It was defensive end Glenn Dorsey, linebacker Demorrio Williams, defensive tackle Ron Edwards and defensive end Dion Gales who were again not suited up during this evening’s practice.
- During 11-on-11, players seeing time with the first-string base defense included: defensive ends Alfonso Boone and rookie Alex Magee, defensive tackle Tank Tyler, linebackers Tamba Hali, Mike Vrabel, Monty Beisel, and Zach Thomas, cornerbacks Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr and safeties Jarrad Page and Bernard Pollard. Replacing Thomas in the first-string nickel defense was cornerback Maurice Leggett, playing the nickelback spot.
- (Have to love this) The running backs and linebackers got together and did some one-on-one blitz pickup blocking. Linebacker Zach Thomas got the defense off to a good start. Thomas landed a huge hit on running back Mike Cox, picking him up and throwing him down like it was nothing. The defense appeared to completely dominate the drill.
- Punter Dustin Colquitt spent about five minutes kicking footballs from the 30-yard line on field 2 toward the goal post on the south end of the field. Kicker Ryan Succop was shagging the balls and throwing them back to long snapper Tanner Purdum who would return them to Colquitt. Each of Colquitt’s punts were landing on the 20-yard line, making each worth about 50 yards.
Well, that about sums it up for yesterday’s PM practice. Today’s single practice goes from 2-4 PM.

Chiefs Conditioning Test Update
As I’m sure you are aware of by now, Chiefs head coach Todd Haley has required that each player on the Chiefs pass a conditioning test before they are allowed to practice in team activities.
Here are some quotes regarding this conditioning test that took place this morning:
Via JoshLooney’s (of kcchiefs.com) Twitter page
Coach Haley says conditioning test met expectations…ready to get things started tomorrow.
Via UW-RF site
Tight end Brad Cottam showed up to lunch at the University Center wearing a yellow cut-off shirt and a green visor. He commented on the conditioning test that Head Coach Todd Haley had the players participate in earlier in the morning. “Most guys made it,” Cottam said. He said the team knew the test was coming, so they had been preparing for it and working hard in the off-season. Cottam said that the mentality of the team so far has been “exciting and new.” “We’ll see in a week how things are looking,” he said. Cottam also said that he’s excited to get pads on and practice
More from UW-RF
When asked if he thought this year’s team was in better shape than last year, center Rudy Niswanger said, “Oh yeah.” Niswanger said that being in shape allows for the players to stay better conditioned and learn how to approach plays smarter. With being better conditioned, Niswanger forsees his team being able to stay fresh throughout an entire game. “We’ll have better fourth quarters,” he said. “Therefore, we’ll have less fourth quarter losses.”
Here is one player who didn’t pass the test (via Red Zone)
Defensive end Glenn Dorsey admitted Friday that he was among the handful of players who didn’t pass the test.
“Close,” he said after a long pause. “I’ve still got a ways to go.”
In Dorsey’s defense, he had ice taped to his left lower leg. It’s ostensibly the same injury that kept Dorsey out of most offseason practices. Dorsey has enough work ahead that he can’t afford a long absence from practices, which begin tomorrow. Haley has said players can’t join team activities before passing the test. Dorsey is making the switch from tackle to end.
Bob Gretz confirms that everyone did not pass the test
Haley would not talk at all about those players who failed the conditioning test. The coach made the session off-limits to media and fans. He did indicate that a number of players will not be passed on the team physical for a number of reasons, and thus will be unable to practice Saturday morning.
But Coach Haley doesn’t seem TOO worried as of yet:
“We don’t have anybody that’s real far off and that’s what I feel good about,” Haley said of those players that will start practice on the sideline. “None of these are long term deals and we should have everybody going pretty soon.”
Well, there you have the jest of it. Most of the Chiefs players passed the mandatory conditioning test and the ones didn’t are not too far off. Overall good news, now… let’s get workin’ boys!

NFL Outsider Season Preview 2009: Kansas City Chiefs
Last year was a very rough year to be a Chief. One positive that can be taken from this is finishing 2-14 there is really nowhere to go but up and Chiefs seem to doing everything in their power to make the best on and off the field decisions to help their organization for both now and the future..
Let’s talk about some of the key losses for the Chiefs and then we will go on and see what they added.
Thanks for the opportunity MVN and thanks to all of you for reading. Go Chiefs!!

Renovations at Arrowhead: The New Arrowhead Stadium - Video
I just came across this video (from kcchiefs.com) that covers some of the new renovations at Arrowhead Stadium, including a new section called the VIP Club Level.
Looks pretty sweet to me, but makes me wonder how much $$ that cost to get access. Let’s us know what you think in the comment section below.
(having an issue with the video showing up below for some reason, but you can view the video here as well)

Chiefs sign Ryan Succop and agree to terms with Colin Brown
The Chiefs have officially started signing their 2009 NFL draft picks and the last player taken overall is the first one.
Chiefs Sign Seventh-Round Pick K Ryan Succop
Succop (6-2, 218) joined the Chiefs as the third of the club’s three seventh-round selections (256th overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft. He played in 50 games at South Carolina, connecting on 49 of 69 field goals (71.0%) with a career-long of 55 yards. He also converted 104 PATs and racked up a total of 251 points, the second-highest total in school history. He added 69 touchbacks on 192 kickoffs. He served as the punter during his sophomore and junior seasons, punting 85 times for 3,597 yards (42.3 avg.) with 22 inside the 20 and three touchbacks.
Succop played in 13 games as a senior in 2008, earning honorable mention All-Southeastern Conference honors. He connected on 20 of 30 field goals (66.7%), leading the SEC in both made FGs and FG attempts. He converted all 30 of his PATs for 90 total points.
From what I have heard Succop has a really strong leg, as in he has 60 range, but the problem is it may not go 60 yards straight. So, the Chiefs have to decide if they want distance or accuracy because I highly doubt they will carry two kickers.
Also, Chiefs 5th round draft pick Colin Brown has reportedly agreed to terms with the Chiefs but no contract has been signed (that we know about). Via Scout.com
The Kansas City Chiefs have reached a contract agreement with fifth-round pick OT Colin Brown, Scout.com has confirmed. According to a league source, it’s a three-year deal worth nearly $1.34 million with a signing bonus of close to $154,000.
The former University of Missouri offensive lineman lined up at right tackle during the team’s OTA practices.
Possible replacement forDamion McIntosh? Only time will tell.
Well, there you have it Chiefs fans, any thoughts? Who do you think the next player to sign with the team will be?

Brandon Carr Interview

One of my favorite things is when people use the contact form on this website, I love hearing from other fans and finding out what they think about the Chiefs currently. Also, people send me cool links sometimes too, and this is one of those occasions. So, thanks Patrick for the nice interview with Brandon Carr about his golf outing, returning to his hometown and his hopes for this season with the Chiefs.
(this is just a small portion of the interview, check out the link for the full interview)
New coaching staff this year, how’s that going so far, the transition from coach (Herman) Edwards to coach (Todd) Haley and his staff?
I think it’s going pretty good, just all about guys knowing their roles and doing their jobs. You know, we got new coaching staff, different expectations and everyone on the team has a clean slate for the most part, so that gives a lot of guys extra motivation just to work hard in the offseason because anybody can play now, the best guys are gonna play no matter where you’re drafted, a free agent, that’s what coach said the first day. So we’re just working and competing and gotta learn a whole new scheme, but when it comes down to it, it’s just football.
You had a pretty good rookie season and saw a lot of playing time. What’s your role in this system, does it suit your talents and what you’re able to do?
I think the system is a pretty good one, just gotta go out there and execute. What you learn from the coaches and what you learn from your playbook, like I said, the best 11 are gonna play and I’m gonna work my but off to make sure I’m one of those to go out there and help the team win ballgames.
…
Looking forward to the season, do you have any specific goals for yourself or for the Chiefs, anything you hope to reach by next year?
Uh, yeah we have our team goals. Our goal right now is pretty much to just take it one practice, one play, one game at a time and then in the season hopefully our record is good enough that we can advance and play in the playoffs. It’s kind of too early to think about those things, I’m just trying to get my body and mind right for this training camp.
Goals for myself, I just want to pick up where I left off last year. You know, try to make more plays, get my hand on a few more balls and help the team win.
Now go ahead and check out the rest of the interview here: Brandon Carr Interview.
Have a good one and GO CHIEFS!

Carl Peterson gets a new job

Former Chiefs GM/King Carl Peterson has found a new job as the chairman of the USA Football League. I think this could actually be a good fit for Mr. Peterson
Former Kansas City Chiefs executive Carl Peterson is the new chairman of USA Football. He replaces the late Jack Kemp.
In case you are wondering USA Football is the ‘national governing body of youth football’.
The group was endowed by the NFL and NFL Players Association in 2002. It hosts more than 100 football events annually, instructing coaches, players and game officials and providing resources for youth football league commissioners.
USA Football said Tuesday it will host a junior world championship from June 27-July 5 in Canton, Ohio.
According to USA Football these will be some of Peterson’s responsibilities:
Peterson will preside over USA Football’s board of directors and offer his insight toward USA Football initiatives, including:
- Nearly 50 full-day “Coaching Schools” in more than 30 states to train volunteer youth football coaches
- 40 nationwide meetings of youth football commissioners to offer insight and share best practices
- Nearly 20 officiating camps and seminars nationwide to educate and recruit football officials
- 12 three-day “Player Academies” conducted across the country to advance players’ skills, aged 9-14
- Distribution of $500,000 in equipment grants for youth football leagues, based on merit and need
- Distribution of $500,000 in volunteer youth football coach and volunteer background check subsidies
- Creation of the USA Football Youth Football Rule Book & National Playing Standard, unifying the youth game
- Author exclusive and innovative youth football-related research to further advance America’s favorite sport
I wish the best to Carl in his new venture and to USA Football… Good Luck.
