The Chiefs need to take a lesson from this college referee - don’t be defensive, go on the offense.

Napoleon Harris News

Getting lost in the shuffle this week between all the Tony Gonzalez and Larry Johnson news was some news concerning former Chiefs LB Napoleon Harris.  Yes, that’s right, I said FORMER. Harris was cut by the Chiefs after they were unable to trade him prior to the trade deadline on Tuesday.

It is also being reporting that Nap Harris has found a new/old home. According to The Viking Age:

Napoleon Harris will serve a second tour of duty as a Vikings linebacker after signing a contract for the rest of the season. Harris began the year with Kansas City but was unable to crack the depth chart for whatever reason - this after a 2007 campaign which saw him lead the Chiefs in tackles.

Nap will now be reunited with former Chiefs Jared Allen and Benny Sapp(Attack).
I still wonder how the Chiefs couldn’t get anything for him (even a 7th rounder?) and then the moment he is cut he draws interest from at least two other teams. Oh well… Whatever, right…

Looks like Greg Wesley found a new home already. What does Al Davis like about former Chiefs? I guess any chance to make the Chiefs (or any other division foe) look bad is worth a shot for him. Hope it doesn’t work out so well for him this time.

Veteran safety Greg Wesley’s first career foray into free agency didn’t last long.A league source tells us that Wesley has signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Raiders, only days after he was cut by the Chiefs.

Ex-Chief Steve Bono inspired Denver fans

So, any of you that been lucky enough to go to a Chiefs-Broncos game in Denver within the last 12 years have heard the horrifically annoying phrase “IN-COM-PLETE” and know all about it. For those of you that don’t know what we are talking about, every time an opposing team throws a pass and it falls to the ground the PA announcer gets on the mic and says “The pass is…” and then the whole Denver crowd yells “IN-COM-PLETE!” while shaking their orange and blue palm-palms (yes they really do have palm-palms). Well, now we know who to thank… Steve Bono (and Alan Cass).

“Alan Cass, who is stepping down after 20 years as the Broncos’ public address announcer, shared the story with the Rocky Mountain News.

The chant “IN-COM-PLETE” became Cass’ trademark, even though he only said it once.

“The Broncos were playing the Chiefs at Mile High in 1996,” Cass told the newspaper.

“Denver had been whipped badly earlier in the season at Kansas City, so the fans wanted revenge. Chiefs quarterback Steve Bono was having a terrible passing day. So during the first half I announced: ‘Bono’s pass is IN-COM-PLETE.’

“The fans took it from there, picking up the chant during every home game.”

Cass said he and the Broncos agreed that the league might frown on such cheerleading on the public address system. So for over a decade, Cass said only: “The pass is . . . ”

The fans finished the statement.” - Jeffrey Flanagan Blog

So next time you hear the chant IN-COM-PLETE, whether from the stadium or hearing it on TV, you know who to thank.

Kansas City Chiefs to retire Emmitt Thomas’ number

Emmitt Thomas will have his No. 18 jersey number retired by the Kansas City Chiefs to honor his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Thomas, who will enter the Hall of Fame Aug. 2, will be the ninth Chiefs player to have his number retired by the franchise.

Kansas City will honor Thomas in a special ceremony when it hosts the Tennessee Titans Oct. 19. That is Atlanta’s bye week.

Thomas played cornerback for the Chiefs from 1966-1978, where he recorded 58 interceptions, still a franchise record.

An Eddie Freeman Spotting

I’m sure most of you remember former Chiefs DL Eddie Freeman. Well, there has been a spotting. He is now playing for the Calgary Stampeders. There was a write up about him in the Calgary Herald titled “Slimmer, maturer Freeman takes his best shot at CLF” Here are a few exerts from the article.

“In an interview with the Kansas City Star last year, Bob Karmelowicz, who coached the defensive line when Freeman was with K.C., said Freeman and another youngster “were both good kids, but they had social issues. They were too high-maintenance. You can’t take ‘projects’ in the second round. It shouldn’t have happened.”

Karmelowicz also suggested — well after the fact, it must be noted — that Freeman was tough to coach.”

Some More

“There were accusations of over-aggression, too. In Freeman’s first camp with the Chiefs, during a heated drill, offensive lineman John Tait punched the rookie, who responded by hitting Tait in the face with his own helmet. That resulted in a $2,500 fine from the team.”

This is from the official Calgary Stampeders website regarding the upcoming training camp:

DEFENSIVE LINE

Returnees: Terrence Patrick, Randy Chevrier, Pat MacDonald, Miguel Robede, Marcus Parker, Eddie Freeman
Newcomers: Funtaine Hunter, Juwan Simpson, Kevin Harbour, Howard Hodges, LeMarcus Rowell
Analysis: Perhaps the area of greatest interest in camp, the defensive line could see some dramatic changes. Robede is in his third season and hasn’t had a chance to prove whether he can play. He’ll get that chance now, as Hufnagel might make the nose a Canadian position with Chevrier and MacDonald backing up Robede. Freeman, Parker and Hodges all have CFL experience and are competing for the other tackle spot. The Stamps have plenty of athletic ends in camp, possibly highlighted by Funtain Hunter — who had spell here on the practice roster last season as a linebacker — and Juwan Simpson. Patrick is the most experienced players on the line and the entire front should make for great camp competition.

Nothing like seeing a former Chiefs 2nd round pick struggling to make a CFL team. Here’s to me hoping that the days of drafting “projects” in the 2nd round is over.
