WIth the big cut day looming the Chiefs released eight players on Friday, including former starting RT Damion McIntosh.
Here are the list of players with some of my thoughts following.
Offense
T Damion McIntosh - Is anyone really that surprised? I’m not.
T Herb Taylor - I am honestly more surprised about this cut than McIntosh. Just shows that Haley and Pioli only care about what you can do for me, not what you have done.
G Tavares Washington - Think he was injured in camp but I never really heard his name mentioned much in reports from River Falls.
C Eric Ghiaciuc - Former starting center for the Bengals couldn’t beat out Rudy Niswanger who hasn’t been all that impressive himself. Enough said.
FB Jed Collins - I barely heard this guys name called this preseason. I think we all knew Mike Cox was the guy.
Defense
CB Travis Daniels - Signed during the offseason and didn’t do enough to stand out.
CB Londen Fryar - Didn’t do enough in camp to make the team. Chiefs are deep at CB though so this was already an uphill battle.
ILB Corey Smith - Not a surprise here. Chiefs have a lot of decisions to make at LB and he obviously was not a good fit and didn’t do enough to make the cut..
So now that is 8 players cut with 14 more to go. Who do you think is next?
The Chiefs had a closed to the media workout session today that included 3 WR’s , 3 OL and 1 QB. We have since learned that the wide recievers were Amani Toomer, David Terrell and D.J. Hackett.
It is also being reported that the Kansas City Chiefs are “leaning towards” signing Amani Toomer. (via ESPN)
“The Kansas City Chiefs are leaning toward signing veteran receiver Amani Toomer, according to two NFL sources.
Toomer could be signed as soon as Tuesday if the Chiefs follow through their current thinking, the sources said. Toomer was one of three veteran receivers Kansas City worked out Monday as their early training-camp work showed the team they may need more help for new quarterback Matt Cassel.”
Toomer is obviously the more polished of the three wide outs and would give the Chiefs some more vetern leadership on a fairly young offense (similar to Bobby Engram).
Personaly I think that signing Toomer would be a great move at this point. He is stil available so you know he isn’t going to demand lots of $$, he provides veteran leadership, and still has plenty of gas left in the tank. The Patroits were/are famous for signing “old” veteran players who are out to prove they still ‘have it’. Oh, and did I mention the Chiefs still have plenty of room under the cap (I don’t even know if they have met the minimum yet).
Even if this didn’t work out the worst that could happen for the Chiefs is they cut him and lose a little bit of money It’s a win-win in my book.
P.s. In other Chiefs news the Kansas City Chiefs have cut guard Edwin Harrison (who has sat out mutliple practices recenlty so this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise). This also means the Chiefs are back down to 81 roster spots.
So what do you think Chiefs fans? Would Toomer be a good fit in KC?
I will try to keep this post updated as I hear anything new.
As of right now, here are the undrafted free agents the Chiefs have signed:
DE Pierre Walters (Eastern Illinois) WR Taurus Johnson (South Florida) LB Jovan Belcher (Maine) DT Dion Gales (Troy) DB Londen Fryar (W. Michigan) DE Bobby Greenwood (Alabama) OT Cameron Goldberg (Duke) LB Bobby Abare (Yale) S Ricky Price (Oklahoma State)
A couple more notes:
Ryan made a good call on this very blog about the Chiefs and Jovan Belcher. Good Call Ryan!
Broncos have signed themselves a Colquitt as they sign UDFA Punter Britton Colquitt (Tennessee).
The Chiefs agreed to contract terms today with veteran offensive lineman Mike Goff. Goff has some versatility and could wind up starting for the Chiefs at center or right guard.
The 33-year-old Goff played 11 NFL seasons, the first six with Cincinnati and the last five with San Diego. He has been a starter for the past nine seasons.
I really like this signing. Mike Goff seems to be a very solid player and should be an instant upgrade for whatever position he ends up playing on the offensive line.
Some might criticize this signing because of Goff’s age (he’s 33) but I don’t see that as a problem. Even if he only has a few years left in him I think he is worth signing. This also shows that Pioli and Haley want to win now and know that while young is good, you need the right amount of veterans mixed in.
Also, notice another word in that quote, “versatility”. We all know how Pioli loved versatile players in NE and looks to be continuing the trend here in KC.
The Kansas City Chiefs have found their starting quarterback. NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reports the Chiefs acquired QB Matt Cassel from the New England Patriots in a trade.
The teams have agreed on compensation, but no details of the deal were immediately available.
Adam Schefter has proven that what he says is MONEY lately so I believe him.
We all know the Chiefs have many holes to fill this off season. Obviously the draft is a great place to set the building blocks of a team, but not everyone can be a 1st round pick. Here are two prospects projected to go in the mid to late rounds of the draft that could potentially help our team going forward:
(Courtesy of National Football Post)
Tyronne Green, OG, Auburn (6-2, 305)
Like many of the draft-eligible prospects at Auburn this year, Green fell victim to the team’s overall lack of performance more than his own effort. His strong interior line play at times was forgotten as the Tigers stumbled to a 5-7 record, and he was considered more of a late-round pick than a potential top-five prospect. After receiving an invitation to the Senior Bowl, however, Green didn’t disappoint. He lacks ideal size for the guard position, but he possesses a dominant punch and consistently jars defenders on contact. He did a great job all week moving defensive linemen off the ball and showcases the lateral mobility to slide in pass protection. He’s been steadily moving up draft boards since his strong performance in Mobile and now ranks among the top-five guards on most boards. Green still needs to add some polish to his game, but he possesses intriguing upside and could hear his name called as early as the third round.
JovanBelcher, OLB, Maine (6-2, 229)
After Belcher was selected All-Colonial Athletic Association at linebacker as a junior, the Maine coaching staff thought it was in the team’s best interest to move him to defensive end last season. Belcher responded with a 7½ sacks and 17½ tackles for loss, good enough to garner him All-America honors. Then, at the Texas vs. the Nation Bowl, he had a fantastic week showcasing not only the ability to attack downhill but also the fluidity to flip his hips and play in space. He displayed the versatility to play both inside and outside linebacker positions and is becoming an intriguing option for 3-4 defenses. He lacks great size and speed but plays a lot faster than his times and consistently showcases an ability to get after the quarterback. He started the year way off the radar as a possible midweek free-agent signee, but now Belcher looks like a possible late-round pick who, worst-case scenario, will be signed soon after the draft.
So what do you think Chiefs fans? Should we go after Green or Belcher in this draft? Sound off!
With my first post as a new writer on this blog I would like to welcome any and all criticism, debate, kudos, etc. I know Chiefs fans do not always see eye to eye, but in the end we all want the same thing. A winning football team and a chance at a championship. We can debate all day long about the proper path to achieve this, but just remember we are all on the same side.
At this point it sounds like Todd Haley will be the new Chiefs Head Coach, awaiting a few details and signatures to make it official. So with that finally resolved the next big questions will surround the staff he will assemble. Will he be able to coax any of his buddies from Arizona to follow him? Will Chan Gailey stay on as Offensive Coordinator? Who will he hire at Defensive Coordinator? In this short post I will look at a couple of options.
Offense:
Frankly I believe our offense, at least the last half of the season, was not to blame for the majority of our loses. The defense ended up losing quite a few winnable games in 2008. I’ve long been a fan of Gunther, but he and Herm just did not see eye to eye when it came to defensive schemes. A new start in Detroit should prove productive for Gunther, given he can find any talent to surround himself with.
So with that said, I whole heartedly believe Chan Gailey should stay on as Offensive Coordinator in 2009. He was able to take Tyler “Getting Thiggy Wit It” Thigpen, and transform him into a respectable NFL QB. Thiggy is not your “typical” under center, NFL style quarterback, but he has proven himself as a viable option given the appropriate game plan. Don’t let our record fool you, we were a much more competitive team the last half of the season, rather it produced wins or not.
Combining Gailey’s knack for making something out of nothing, and Haley’s obviously offensive prowess, we could easily have a top 15 offense this year. I will discuss my thoughts on the draft at a later date.
Defense:
So what about our defense that ranked near the bottom of the league in virtually every statistical category in 2008? If we can find a Defensive Coordinator that is on the same page as Haley, that alone can only help this unit. Having Gunther “handcuffed” into playing Herm’s style wasn’t productive, and it obviously showed.
So who may be next? One name I’d like to throw out there is Romeo Crennel. What!? The same Romeo Crennel that just got fired by the Browns? Yes. Crennel has shown promise in the past, but as a Defensive Coordinator, not a Head Coach. Some people just aren’t cut out for leading a team, but that doesn’t mean he can’t lead a defense.
In his time as Defensive Coordinator with the Patriots he won three Super Bowls in four years. Not a bad track record. He has been a part of six different Super Bowls and has came out of top five out of those six times. Again, sounds promising right?
Crennel has worked with both Pioli and Haley in the past, along with Parcells and Belichick. He coached with Parcells from 1993-1996 with the Patriots and from 1997-1999 with the Jets. While with the Jets, Pioli was the Director of Pro Personnel (97-2000) and Haley was the Wide Receiver’s Coach (95-2000), so he has history with them. In 2000, Crennel became the Defensive Coordinator for Belichick in New England until 2004. Having both Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick want you as their DC is quite a vote of confidence.
Well that’s my first two cents. I hope I didn’t drag that on too long. As I stated before, please feel free to comment on my style, ideas, etc. Should I post multiple, shorter posts or combine them into one like this? Also, I do pride myself with be at the fore front of most all rumors and/or happenings with the Chiefs and hope to have more “breaking news” rumors posted on a regular basis.
The Chiefs have signed for Bears WR Mark Bradley. This guy was drafted in the 2nd round so he obvious has some talent and the Bears are not really a place where WR’s go to thrive (same could probably be said here I guess).
Anyways, here is a little bit about him from the KC Star
A second-round pick of the Bears in 2005, Bradley’s career has mostly been a disappointment.
He had his best season when he was a rookie, making 18 catches. That number fell to 14 the following season and six last year.
He was released by Chicago this year after playing in two games and not making a catch.
Here are his stats (not much to look at). I have also heard that Bradley had some sort of ACL injury in the past, just throwing that out there for whatever it’s worth.
I like the idea that the Chiefs are at least trying to improve the talent level at WR and I belive he is 26 so he is still a young guy that fits with this youth movement. Hope it works out, but not getting my hopes up yet.
