No Standing at Chiefs Games? Are you Serious?!

I’m going to say it again… No Standing at Chiefs Games? Are you Serious?! According to an article found here there is a new code of conduct at Arrowhead Stadium that will prohibit people from standing.
Here is a quote from the article

There’s a bit of a buzz on the Internet right now about the Chiefs’ “Fan Code of Conduct,” which is posted on the team’s website. Specifically, one policy states that the Arrowhead Stadium staff will proactively intervene with fans who are “standing and/or obstructing the view of other fans.”

How much are they really going to enforce this and what are they going to do to the people they bust? I am sure I am not the only one that finds this a little crazy. Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand in certain situations this is a legitimate concern. I mean just use common sense people; if someone is physically unable to stand up behind you please be thoughtful and remember that person paid the same amount of money as you did to see the game (unless they got the ticket off eBay and paid half price then that only entitles them to half of the game, right?… j/k). But in all seriousness, please don’t be that guy that stands up the entire game just to piss off the people behind you. I have seen this happen first hand and we all know that nobody likes that guy. So please don’t be that guy. But I see nothing wrong with standing to cheer on your team and I don’t think we should be limited in doing so.

In my opinion here are some times when Chiefs fans should be standing:

  • Almost any 4th and 1 situation (offense or defense)
  • When the Chiefs score a TD. (We don’t know how often this will happen anyway so enjoy while you can)
  • Goal-line situations (offense or defense)
  • Situations that have a major influence on the outcome of the game.

What do you think Chiefs fans? At what points should we be standing or sitting?

I am and have been a Chiefs fan my entire life. I went to my first game in 2004 and have been addicted ever since. At Arrowhead, "the home of the... CHIEFS", you quickly learn that game-day itself is the true experience, everything from the road trip, to the tailgating before the game, all the way until being one of the last to leave the parking lot is included. Go Chiefs!

  1. No a Chiefs’ fan, but this is ridiculous. An old guy once yelled at me for standing up during the LSU - Florida game last year. Everyone else was standing up, but he wanted me to sit down.

So you know what I did? I kept standing. He moved.

  2. I agree. With the few exceptions that I pointed out in the article I think it is fine to stand.

It takes a lot of nerve to ask you to sit down when everyone around you is standing.

  6. i think it is great–now I can work on my tan without having someone standing and blocking the son/sun–and my buddy’s wife can finally go to the game and be able to knit or read—and my beer won’t get sloshed around so I can bring my laptop–why didn’t we think of this earlier?, maybe we did not want to compete with the symphony/ballet crowd–there is room for everyone–if I have to sit will they now pad my seat—that would be really nice—-go chiefs, have a most spectacular, fabulous, outstanding performance

  7. Does this mean that the team has to sit down on the field also? Then they won’t ever score and no one will want to stand up or go to the games anyway.

  10. Well thank God the Packers don’t have to play there for another 3 years (maybe).

  11. Simple solution, have them pay to be in a “sitting only section”. Put the section waaaaay up top, in the first row on the railing so no-one blocks their view, You would only need 4 or 8 seats max.
    Go Big Blue!!!

  13. Copied from the site;
    • Excessive standing and/or obstructing the view of other fans.
Doesn’t sound like it’s any different from the rules now! I think bigknoxy forgot the word “excessive” and read a little too much into it!

  15. I have been to so many games at Arrowhead, I can’t even count them… I was standing through almost every game. The exception is when we were losing.

Have you ever seen a picture of the stadium? Look at one. Everyone is standing. It’s part of the experience of going to Arrowhead.

I’ll go this year. I’ll stand. My guess is that by game 2 or 3, that will either be off the books or they just won’t enforce it.

  16. Chiefs are only hurting themselves. If I paid for a seat, I should be able to use that space as I see fit. What’s next, limited access and trips to the aisle? Wouldn’t want to disrupt others by going to the head or buying a beer too often.

What it’s really about is energy. Standing allows fans to project more noice and be more involved. I disagree with the 4th & 1 type exceptions. If you want to help the team, you stand and be loud on EVERY defensive play. For offence, maybe you want to stand for a better view of the opposite endzone or 4th down, but it’s not as necessary, since the offense needs quiet. I’ve seen it at other stadiums, people standing and yelling because they are excited about the offence going for a 4th and short. The players have to gesture to the fans “Shut up”. Geez, I didn’t think football 101 would be needed for Chiefs fans.

As for scoring, duh, if you can’t stand and cheer when the team scores, you have no business being there. Go home. My guess is there will be so few fans this year, most will be able to stand and not block anyone’s view.

  17. In New Jersey when people stand at the jets games and people get mad they just throw food at you until you sit down. If the situation calls for it everyone is standing anyway, when they hit in the back with a pretzel they will get the hint.

    [Reply]

  18. @Ralph: I like that idea… lol. Nothing says sit down like getting smacked in the ear with a salted pretzel.

  19. Salted pretzel or other food… Doesn’t that get to be an expensive message? Maybe empty plastic cup or container at appropriate rate of speed might be better.

    [Reply]

  20. @ Pat: LOL. Yeah, I agree that could get expensive. At the Chiefs games we can bring in plastic water bottles so maybe we could just leave a bit of water in the bottle and use that instead… or we could just send an anonymous text message. lol… :)

  21. i witnessed this rule at the preseason game, i didnt think anything like this would actually happen our starting defense took the field and no one was standing and it didn’t feel right at all. i have been going to chiefs games since i was five, so it’s been 11 years and i’ve never seen anything so f**king stupid in my life f**k that rule and GO CHIEFS!

    [Reply]

  22. @trev: I am hoping that was just because it was the preseason. Hopefully when the regular season starts up the fans will stand when the starting D takes the field, I know I will be. Go Chiefs!
