Daunte’s Latest Inferno and Gettin’ Thiggy with it

It is being reported that the Chiefs have contacted Daunte Culpepper twice this year. Once was right after the season opening shoulder injury to Croyle and Culpepper said he didn’t want to come back in a ‘fill in’ role. The second time was this week and Culpepper said something to the effect of he was happy after he looked at his financial portfolio and coaching his son’s youth football team. It looks like he may have changed his mind.

Culpepper is his own agent and sent out the following email to the media:

“A number of teams have contacted me since my retirement announcement and have provided some important information that has caused me to reconsider returning to the league. As much as I have enjoyed my brief break from playing, I know that I love the game and I have some unfinished business in the NFL. It has never been because of a lack of passion for the game but rather the absence of a fair opportunity to complete and play that caused me to retire.”

“Now that there are some real opportunities that match my desire to play, I will choose the one that is the best fit for both the team and me so that I can continue my NFL career. For the second half of this season, I hope to play a role in helping a team win some games. I want to thank all of those who encouraged me to ‘keep a light on’ for the right NFL opportunity that would eventually come back to me.”

This really makes me wonder if Culpepper is considering signing with the Chiefs. I really hope so. I think Culpepper could come to the Chiefs and play for a year or two and the Chiefs could still draft a young QB to develop.

This is a situation that could benefit both parties. If nothing else, Culpepper gets an extended audition for other teams to prove that he still has it and it gives the Chiefs young QB’s a former pro-bowl player to study under. That situation seems ideal to me.

Now, it news about a QB that actually will be wearing red this Sunday, the Chiefs want Tyler Thigpen to be “careful”. Most people would say that is probably because Herm doesn’t want to have to start QB #4 on the year… and that looks to be the case (although I would bet that a fourth QB will start for the Chiefs before this season is over, maybe 5).

The Chiefs want Thigpen to run and make plays. They just don’t want him to do it recklessly.

“He’s got to be careful,” coach Herm Edwards said Thursday. “His instincts are to run. We don’t want him running a lot because if he’s down, we get to (quarterback) No. 4.

    “This is hard enough.”

Anyone giving out odds that we will see Ingle Martin take a few snaps this week?  Before you do remember, for whatever it is worth, that Thigpen, unlike some other Chiefs QBs, has actually started and finished a game this year.

Good Luck Chiefs!

  2. My hope is about a 70% chance that we will see Ingle Martin take a snap this week. Not because Thigpen will get hurt, but I’m thinking we’ll get blown out once again and so we might as well get him some snaps during a live game to see what he can do.

  4. If that is the case then I am all about it man. At this point we need to take a hard look at anyone. Not saying the Chiefs have one, but there is almost always someone buried on someone’s depth chart that will be a good player in the NFL when given a shot.
