Where does the Savage fit in?
As I’m sure many of already know the Kansas City Chiefs signed undrafted free agent Dantrell Savage, a 5-foot-8, 182-pound running back out of Oklahoma State. I personally like the signing of Savage and that is probably due to the fact that I saw him play during the last Big 12 regular season. He seems like a very good back and I am assuming that he did not get his name called on draft day because of his relatively small size for a NFL running back, but according to a recent article in the KC Star, if you ask Savage he will tell you that his height is his secret weapon.
Now, in the overall scheme of things the current running back situation in KC does make me wonder why exactly the Chiefs did sign Savage. Larry Johnson is fully recovered from his injury, but even while LJ was injured Kolby Smith filled in and did an adequate job. Also, in the third round of this years draft the Chiefs selected Texas RB Jamal Charles.
Where does that leave room for Savage? Could the Chiefs be looking at him as a possible kick returner? I thought the Chiefs drafted a WR that was a possible return man but his name escapes me at the moment. Either way, this really makes me wonder what Savage’s role will be here. Even if he is just here to create more competition for the other Chiefs running backs, or kick returners then I think this was a good sign by the Chiefs. Competition is always a good thing. I wish Savage the best of luck.
And on note that relates to Savage’s small size and the possible new blocking system for the Chiefs, here is a quote from Savage from an article at the KC Star. Take it for what’s it worth.
“If I’m running in a zone-blocking system, I just kind of move along the line and then shoot through a gap, and a lot of times the linebackers and safeties don’t even see me. They can’t pick me up.”

I think Kolby Smith may be the odd man out but im just guessing
I personally can’t see Kolby not making the team. In LJ’s absence last year he proved that he’s a more than capable NFL backup RB in my opinion. The only way I could see Savage making the team is if he becomes our return guy (a la Dante Hall who came out as a very small RB as well). Hopefully we could get him on our practice squad if he doesn’t make it. He definitely has some potential.
Yeah, I tend to agree with James on this one. BUT if Savage comes out and starts dominating I’m sure they will find a spot for him on the roster.
With that said I also don’t think they are going to put him ahead of guys they spent draft picks on, just because that’s usually how it works (unless he just goes LT style or something)
