No more BJ’s for the Chiefs, don’t worry it’s a good thing.

SInce the Chiefs have signed WR Mark Bradely, who was released from the Chicago Bears, they had to release someone, and guess who that someone was…

B.J. Sams.   Yes, you’re telling me.  It was about time for this sum bee to be shown the door. I already thought he should have been gone, and with Savage having that great return against the Donks when we needed it most that just put the icing on the cake.

Savage will take punt return duties and Savage and Jamal Charles will be returning kickoffs. This week just keeps getting better!  Now, if we just just keep this momentum going and take it to Carolina!

Git-r-done Chiefs!

Do the Chiefs get a B.J. or a Savage?

The Chiefs have a very tough decision to make regarding their kick and punt return duties to start the season. You have the veteran coming off of an injury, B.J. Sams, and then the undrafted free agent, Dantrell Savage.

Here are a look at their stats:

RAMS GAME

    Kick Returns:
    Player/Attempts/Yards/Average/Long
    D. Savage 2 64 32.0 40
    B. Sams 1 30 30.0 30

    Punt Returns:
    Player/Attempts/Yards/Average/Long
    D. Savage 2 26 13.0 19
    B. Sams 1 34 34.0 34

MIAMI GAME

    Kick Returns
    Player/Attempts/Yards/Average/Long
    D. Savage 4 80 20.0 36
    B. Sams 1 33 33.0 33

    Punt Returns
    Player/Attempts/Yards/Average/Long
    B. Sams 2 19 9.5 10
    D. Savage 2 11 5.5 11

CARDINALS GAME

    Kick Returns
    Player/Attempts/Yards/Average/Long
    D. Savage 3 99 33.0 45
    B. Sams 1 40 40.0 40

    Punt Returns
    Player/Attempts/Yards/Average/Long
    B. Sams 2 20 10.0 14
    D. Savage 2 18 9.0 13

CHICAGO GAME

    Kick Returns
    Player/Attempts/Yards/Average/Long
    J. Charles 2 43 21.5 23
    D. Savage 2 36 18.0 27

    Punt Returns
    Player/Attempts/Yards/Average/Long
    No Attempts

With the recent injury to Sams it really makes you wonder if that will screw him when it comes time to make the decision. You can tell from the stats above that Sims was given limited opportunities compared to Savage but he also didn’t really stand out until the final preseason game… and then he got hurt.

With Sams the Chiefs get a “safe” option, someone that can field kicks with sure hands, and is less likely to make a mistake. Savage has more “upside” but could be prone to rookie mistakes. But something that Savage does has going for him that Sams does not is his ability to play the running back position. Sams actually lined up at WR a few times in camp, but let’s face it, that isn’t going to happen.

If I had to guess right now I would say that Savage has the job. One thing to keep in the back of your mind though is sixth round draft pick K. Robinson who was drafted specifically as a return specialist. Robinson can be activated of the PUP list after week 6 if the Chiefs choose to do so.
