Chiefs vs Texans: Likes/Dislikes
Here is what I liked and didn’t like about the Chiefs 2009 Preseason Opener against the Houston Texans:
WHAT I LIKED
Brodie Croyle: Croyle actually looked like a legit QB yesterday. He had nice zip on the ball, threaded the needle, and even took a hit or two and manaaged to get up quickly. Kudos to the second string O-line for protecting him as well, they looked pretty solid.
New Arrowhead: Although it is not 100% complete yet the ‘new Arrowhead’ looks very nice. The new replay video boards are awesome, along with the wider concords and flat screen TV’s everywhre. I managed to get saome HD video and quite a few pictures, so be on the lookout for a post in the near future.
Rush Defense: During the first drive the rush defense looked pretty good. There were a few misteps but overall I would say I could see improvement.
Two Sacks in ONE game: Even though Maurice Leggett is the current sack leader for the Chiefs, the Chiefs were able to get some presure on the quarterback and get two sacks in a single game. I know the bar is set really low for them right now, but considering the 10 total sacks in ONE SEASON last year I would say this is someting to be happy about.
Dwayne Bowe: Even though it was against the second string defense Bowe looked very solid. Also he didn’t speak to reporters after the game. Is this a new D Bowe?
Ryan Succop: Nailing a 47 yard kick with no time left in rainy conditions makes me very happy. I hope this wasn’t a fluke.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
Kick Returns: No one really stepped up to the challenge this game; it was medocroer at best.
The Rain: At first it was a nice light sprinkle.. but then it started. I woke up this morning with cold chills still.
Felt like last season: I can’t exactly put my finger on it, but something about this game (esp mid to late in the game) just felt like last season. I was expecting bigger ang better things I guess… BUT I have decided I will reserve judgement on this until the Chiefs play a game that matters in the standings.
Brodie Croyle’s Intentional Grounding: This was just a mental air and should be easily corrected. Other than that he had a solid game.
MAKES ME GO “EH”:
Matt Cassel: It seems like the coaches wanted to ease Cassel into it this game. 2 for 5 for 15 yards… Eh…
Third String OL: Seemed like Thiggy was running for his life, but sometimes I think that is how Thigpen likes it.
Since I was able to list more positives than negatives I will be happy for now and I will try to remember that this is ‘only preseason’. Also, I thought Cory Mays, Andy Studebaker and Jackie Battle all had very good games and chalked one up on the “why I should make this team” column.
What do you think?

The Chiefs QB Situation… A New Twist
As all of you know the Chiefs seem to be in quite a pickle. Their supposed QB of the future comes back next week to play against the Tennessee Titans and there are still lots of possibilities as to what could happen. If nothing else it should be very interesting to watch the rest of the season play out to say the least.
Suppose Brodie doesn’t get hurt and finishes the season out strong, what do you do then? Do you sign Brodie to an extension or let him go and say that he has already proven he can’t stay healthy for a full season? If this did play out and the Chiefs decided to give him an extension isn’t that just really delaying the inevitable? Brodie seems to the type of player that will get hurt again and when that happens the Chiefs will be back in the very same spot they are now, looking for a new QB.
Suppose Brodie comes back and gets hurt at some point before the season is over, what do you do then? Most would say cut him loose and I tend to agree, but I was thinking that there is still another possibility. If (or when) Brodie gets hurt this season that obviously will lower his value as a QB and this could be a good thing for the Chiefs. They could still go after a new QB, whether via Draft or Free Agency, and resign Brodie for backup or third string type money (assuming he would). If you did this you would have a guy that already knows the playbook and could step in for short times if the new QB gets a little banged up.
Anyways, those are just some thoughts I had on this lazy Friday. What do you guys think? Is this a feasible option or am I smoking something?

One good thing from Chiefs loss to Panthers
If you watched the “game” on Sunday you already know that not much good came out of the Chiefs 34-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers. One that thing that was good for the future of the team was the QB play.
I can hear you already “hhhWHHAAAT?!!?” and “he said WHAT?” and yes that’s right, I said it. By having Damon Huard play so bad that they had to put in Thigpen for relief was a good thing for the future of the Chiefs. If Damon Huard would have went out and played a great game (win or lose) there would have been a QB controversy. Herm (and Carl) would have been in a tough spot, they would have been asking themselves this question:
Do we want to try to win now in what appears to be a wide open AFC West or give Croyle one lost shot and see if he can stay healthy and be our future QB?
While the Chiefs seem committed to this youth movement we all know that in Carl Peterson’s history he has always tried to win now. How do we know that he wouldn’t try to pull this again in one last “last ditch” effort to regain some respect (what little he has left).
So I would just like to say “Thank You” to Damon Huard for sucking it up last Sunday and allowing the Chiefs to move on. At least now when if Croyle gets hurt the Chiefs can finally move on and try something different.
I don’t mean to hate on Croyle, in fact I like what he brings to the table, but you can’t help a team win from the sidelines and the thing that the Chiefs need more than anything else if they want to buid a team that can contend is solid, consistant play from the quarterback position. A good OL wouldn’t hurt either…

Brodie Croyle says he will start against Tennessee
According to the Red Zone Brodie Croyle will be starting the next game for the Kansas City Chiefs.
- Croyle began throwing in individual drills in practice last week and has been cleared for contact.
“If I’m healthy, I’m going to go,” Croyle said today. “I just have to make sure that over the next two weeks that everything keep going the way it’s supposed to be and we don’t have any setbacks. If that’s so, then we’ll be ready to go against Tennessee.”
I am not sure if this is a good or bad thing. The Titans have one of the better defenses (and defensive lines) in the NFL. Albert Haynesworth could have a field day here.
Looking from the other side, I guess if you really want to test Brodie to see if he’ll get hurt again this year this is a great test. If he can survive the Titans maybe that means he is getting tougher? I dunno… I’m just trying to look at it from all angles here.
What do you guys think? Can Croyle make it through the whole game without getting hurt?

Damon Huard will start this Sunday against Denver… YES!
News from the KC Star says that Damon Huard will be the starting QB for the Chiefs when they take the field this Sunday against the Denver Donkeys.
I don’t know about you but I am VERY happy about this move. Well, let me rephrase that, I think starting Damon Huard is the best thing to do if you are the Chiefs. To me this shows that the Chiefs actually are trying to win a game.
I wonder who’s idea this was? Herm seemed content with letting Thigpen start and “seeing what he can do” and Carl Peterson is usually the one wants butts in the seats and for that to happen you need to put the player in that gives you the best chance to win. I don’t know if they just now realized this or what… but thank you for starting Huard this week (whoever made the call). I’ll be at the game anyways, but as a fan I actually feel like the Chiefs are trying a little.
In my opinion, baring some catastrophic meltdown, Huard should be the starter until Brodie comes back for the Titans game. That is assuming that Brodie will be back by then… I guess we’ll see, huh?

Injury to Croyle: He “hopes” to be back in 2-3 weeks
I heard this on the Fox “The OT” show and now here is a link to prove it. Just thought I would let you know if you didn’t already.
Brodie Croyle (separated shoulder) “hopes” to be back in 2-3 weeks, according to FOXSports’ Jay Glazer.
Damon Huard will start in Week 2 against the Raiders. Oakland’s secondary is fantastic, but his insertion is good news for Tony Gonzalez and Dwayne Bowe (assuming Bowe remembers how to catch the ball next week). Since shoulder separations can recur, don’t expect Croyle to be back too soon.
from Rotoworld
After watching the game, I’m not sure if we are better off with Croyle or Huard as our QB, but either way I wish Croyle the best.

Chiefs vs Patriots - Matchups to Watch
I was doing a little thinking today (crazy I know) and I got to thinking about some of the intriguing matchups this week as the Chiefs take on the Pats in Boston.
Randy Moss vs Brandon Flowers: I know Surtain will probably line up against Moss to start the game, but Flowers covering Moss will happen. Flowers has looked very good in the preseason and his work against the Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldon was very encouraging, but its Randy FREAKIN Moss. Moss will makes plays I know but hopefully Flowers will hold his own, and I think he will.
Branden Albert vs Richard Seymour: Are the Chiefs really going to start Branden ‘Phat’ Albert this soon after coming off of an injury? Seymour is an All-Pro and will likely school the first round pick a few times. The coaches would know better than I would, but I just don’t see why they should rush Albert back from this injury. Herb Taylor has looked pretty solid. Maybe they could jsut ease Albert in and play it by ear.
Brodie Croyle vs Brodie Croyle: Yes, that does say that. Will the new and improved Brodie come out to play or when things start to go south with Croyle fallback on his old habits and try to go ‘Brett Favre’? We will soon find out if Chan Gailey and Dick Curl have prepared their QB mentally to make the right decisions.
Tom Brady vs Chiefs Defense: Yeah, this is the gimme matchup to watch but that doesn’t mean I won’t mention it.
Basically this boils down to one question: Is Brady healthy? If Brady is not healthy it could really affect the outcome of this game because after watching the Super Bowl everyone now knows that you need to get pressure on Brady to have a chance to win, so Brady’s mobility could be a big factor in this game. One last question: Is Brady seriously hurt or is Belichick just getting inside all of our heads?
What do you think of these matchups? Are there any other matchups you think will be interesting?

Bowe on Croyle - He’s a little bit country…
I saw this over at Arrowhead Pride and thought I should share it here as well.
Funny quote from D-Bowe at the UWRF site:
After practice, Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe joked with reporters about rooming with quarterback Brodie Croyle. “Brodie is old school. I know he is young but he is the old school type.” Bowe went on to talk about how he is trying to get Croyle to like hip-hop music. When asked if he would listen to Croyle’s country music Bowe said, “I would listen to it. At the very least I would give it a shot and learn the lyrics.” He is still waiting for Croyle’s wife to mail them some country/rock music. Near the end of the interview, Bowe said that tomorrow night will be just a little preview of what to expect this upcoming year.
I think this is great to have our QB and top WR rooming together, they need to be on the same page as much as possible.
