Preseason Game 3 - What I’m looking for
- Image via Wikipedia
Hey all, I know it has been a WHILE since I posted on here but I figure with the season almost in full swing I really need to step my game up. So, here are some things I am looking for tonight when I attend preseason game #3: Chiefs vs Eagles.
New Arrowhead: This will be m y first time going to the new Arrowhead since it has been completed and I am really looking forward to seeing all of the changes. Since I am just your average, run of the mill season ticket holder I will probably not get to see some of the VIP areas (which is why I was sad I couldn’t make it Wednesday night to the open practice at Arrowhead) but it should be awesome nonetheless.
Chiefs Offense: The Eagles are no slouch. In fact their defense could be one of the better defense’s in the league (at worst they are in the top half) so this should be a very good test for Matt Cassel and the Chiefs’ offense. I would like to see two touchdowns from the first team this week along with a new high mark in total points scored. By the way, this will be no easy task as the first team defense for the Eagles has only allowed one TD so far this preseason.
Defensive Line Rotation: It will be very interesting to me to see if the Tyson Jackson vs Wallace Gilberry debate is just a motivational tactic by Haley or if Gilberry really is working his way to more playing time. We probably won’t know the true answer to this until after we get into the season (if ever) but either way I like it. Also, younger players such as Lokey and Magee may be playing for their roster life so I am interested to see what opportunities they are given tonight.
Dexter McCluster/Javier Arenas: These two rookies are being so hyped up it makes you wonder if they will be able to live up to it. I don’t expect either to come out and take over the game tonight, but I would like to get just a little taste of what I can expect this season from these two. Hopefully they leave me licking my chops for the regular season like I do when I stand in line waiting for my Z-man at Oklahoma Joes…
Well, those are a few of things I will be keeping an eye on tonight, what will you be watching for?

Chiefs 2009 Preseason Schedule Released
The preseason schedule for the Kansas City Chiefs has been released.
Week 1 August 13-17
- Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs
Week 2 August 20-24
- Kansas City Chiefs at Minnesota Vikings
Week 3 August 27-31
- Seattle Seahawks at Kansas City Chiefs
Week 4 September 3-7

I don’t know about you, but since I will be attending the home games I am pretty excited that I get to see the first and third preseason games, which in my opinion are the best two games in the preseason to attend.

Preseason Game 4 Chiefs vs. Rams - What I think…
We needed this game. Everybody did, the players, the coaches and definitely us fans. I realize a lot of the Rams’ first stringers didn’t play, but tell me you don’t feel better than you did last week.
Since I got back from the game after midnight last night I didn’t have a chance to re-watch the game yet ( I barely made it into work, lol…), but here is what I think I think.
WHAT I LIKED
Pat Thomas: Yeah I am mainly basing this off of the second defensive play of the game when he came breaking through the made a great tackle for loss. When we first saw the play we just assumed it was DJ, that should tell you all you need to know.
Young CB’s::The young cornerbacks, particularly Brandon Carr, stood out to me this game. He had a very nice breakup of a deep pass.
Rushing Offense: The rushing offense was very affective in this game. If we can run like that all year we won’t have any problems (I know, only the preseason). All of the backs ran hard and it will be a tough decision for the Chiefs on how many RB’s to keep on the team.
B.J. Sams: He had some very nice returns and almost looked like his old self. His returns set up the Chiefs offense with great field position. How serious is his injury and did it cost him the KR/PR job?
As always there were also a few things that didn’t impress me so much.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
Dantrell Savage: I have him on here because of the fumble on the opening kickoff, but after that Savage worked hard to make up for that and didn’t let the fumble keep him down. He ran hard and had some very good returns after Sams went out with the injury. The question is, did he do enough to make the team or did that fumble cost him his job?
Tyler Thigpen: I can’t really tell you any specific plays here, but Thiggy just didn’t impress me at all this game. Combine that with Huards showing and I think we all know that if Croyle goes down Huard will be the one to step in, not Thigpen.
–This one (below) has been on this list for the last TWO weeks and I decided to leave it in again, as it still applies.
Devard Darling: The Darling has done little to impress me this preseason and I am beginning to wonder why he seems to be the lock for the #2 WR. I have heard good reports on him from River Falls, but when is he going to show us what he can do in a game? HOW DO YOU NOT CATCH A PASS THE ENTIRE PRESEASON?
The No FG decision: Fairly late in the game the Chiefs had a chance to kick a long field goal and they decided to go for it instead. I would have love to see one of the kickers attempt it. Don’t you want to know if your kicker can make a field goal late in the game when the weather is not friendly? I do… I understand why they didn’t but I still would have liked to have seen it.
That’s all for this week. BRING ON THE REGULAR SEASON!!

Game DayThread - Preseason Game 4: Chiefs vs Rams
As I said last week I have now started Game Day Threads here at kcchiefsfootball.com.
Today the Chiefs play the annual Governor’s Cup battle against the St. Louis Rams. This should be an awesome display of… wait… you say Trent Green is starting? Steven Jackson won’t play? Will LJ play? D Bo? …Well, it is Chiefs football so I am still excited about it.
It should be interesting getting to see what players will play their way onto the roster and which ones might play their way to going job hunting.
As always please post any comments pictures or whatever in the comment section below.
p.s. Don’t forget the game was pushed up to 6:00 to accomidate the TV coverage of the Demo-Crapic National Convention in Denver… ok, it might not be that bad, but I have never been.

Preseason Game 3 Chiefs vs. Dolphins - What I think…

Well, the excitement I had leftover from the Bears and Cardinals games disappeared faster than a plumber who discovered crack spackle and yesterday all I could muster out was a short video with my game reaction… and yes, there are actually a few things to like from Saturday’s game… I think…
WHAT I LIKED
Derrick Johnson: DJ has been all over the place this preseason and once again was on Saturday night. Johnson’s shedding off a blocker to blow up a screen on the first defensive play of the game was pretty and is one of the few bright spots on the Chiefs’ defense so far.
Young CB’s::The young cornerbacks, particularity Flowers and Carr, continue to progress and show why we drafted them. It says a lot to me that when the ball is in the air coming their way they just keep their cool. I have seen many a veteran CB panic when the ball is in the air and get flagged for pass interference. I don’t belive either of these two have been flagged. NIce INT Carr!
As you can guess there were also a few things that didn’t impress me so much. A few… lol…
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
Nick Novak: Last week I had Connor Barth on here and this week Novak earned the nod after badly missing a field goal. Barth’s kicks (the ones I remember) went to at least the goal-line so he may be the one up on the chart at this point but you really have to wonder if the Chiefs are looking for a veteran kicker. Is Feely over that groin thing yet?
Rush Defense: The Dolphins had a 5.4 yard per carry average on 31 carries but 104 of their rushing yards (164 total) came in the second half and 80 of those yards came on one play in the third quarter. Take from that what you will.
–This one is from last week and I decided to leave it in, as it still applies.
Devard Darling: The Darling has done little to impress me this preseason and I am beginning to wonder why he seems to be the lock for the #2 WR. I have heard good reports on him from River Falls, but when is he going to show us what he can do in a game?
Offensive Line: The Chiefs offensive line looked horrible against the Dolphin and considering the only name I recognized on their DL was Vonnie Holiday, that worries me. I hope the o-line doesn’t start doing the Jeckle/Hide thing this year as they have now done in the preseason.
Brodie Croyle: Sure the protection was bad, but he did nothing to impress me in this game at all. If he plays like that later in the season Croyle will either end up getting hurt or taken out and with the backup situation as it is currently that really scares me. We may just put Tyler Thigpen in and let him run for first downs….
That’s all I feel like listing for this week…

Game DayThread - Preseason Game 3: Chiefs vs Dolphins
I have decided to start doing game time threads here at kcchiefsfootball.com. This is mainly for you, the readers of this blog, to have a place to say whatever you want before, during and after the game. As you all know I am a season ticket holder, so unless the Chiefs allow me bring in my laptop into the stadium (which would be dangerous anyway) I will not be updating this thread during home games. During some of the away games in which I should have internet access I might throw little bits out there, but I would really like this to be a forum for you guys to express your opinions about the game more than anything.
If you would like to help by doing blog updates during the away games start out by posting your comments and we can work from there. Let me know what you guys think and GO CHIEFS!
As for the game, tonight’s game should be a good benchmark to see where the Chiefs are at. The starters should at least play through the first half and possibly into the 3rd quarter. We should see a lot of Brodie Croyle and after the game should have a little better idea about how this season might be.
Feel free to post you feelings below as the game is taking place (before and during is ok too).

Do the Chiefs need to win in the Preseason?
Sorry guys, I thought I published this to the website early this afternoon. Whoopsie!
I was reading an article by Nick Athan over at Warpaint Illustrated and it got me thinking. The article is titled “Chiefs need to beat Bears” and talks about how the Chiefs should be wining their preseason games. Here are a few exerts from his article:
- “Exhibition games are not supposed to count. But for this team they most certainly do, especially after a nine-game losing streak to end 2008.”
“Losing is tough habit to break, but learning how to win can be even more challenging. There is so much pressure on this football team based on 2007 that finding positives early could loom large for the morale of the Chiefs players. It will also signify that wins in August might lead to more in the four months ahead when it really counts.”
I’m not sure that I agree with that and here is why. If they injure one (or more) of their best player trying to win the pre-season that will make them even worse when they are trying to win when the games count. Even if they do build a feeling of winning in the preseason. It’s hard to win without your best players.
I’m also not convinced that winning in the preseason says much besides, our 3rd and 4th stringers are better than yours and that makes it hard to judge a win in the preseason. Most of the time in the preseason the game will be decided in the 4th quarter when your startes, the poeple you pay to play in crucnch time, are on the bench.
I guess in my mind the preseason is mainly for getting back into shape for the season and position battles (something that primetime @ Arrowhead Pride seems to agree with me on.
