So I was getting geared up for the home opener against the Raiders tomorrow and I was trying to figure out what I could that would be “fresh” for this year. During this thought process I remembered that I have a friend (or two) that work at this unnamed place that can customize hats for you, so I decided to give this a shot. I am very happy with the results and have decided to show this off a little bit. Here are some pictures (you can click on them to make them bigger).

What do you guys think of my new hat?   If I were to give away something similar to this in  contest would you be interested?

Preseason Game 1 Chiefs vs. Bears - What I think…

August 8, 2008 by bigknoxy · Leave a Comment
Filed under: KC Chiefs Football

Well, it’s Friday and now I have multiple reasons to be excited.  Yes, I know it was just a preseason game but there some things that I really liked from the game last night.

WHAT I LIKED

The First Drive: The Chiefs initial drive down the field that lasted 8:45 and resulted in a TD was a thing of beauty.  The offense converted all of their third downs on the drive and don’t forget this was on the Bears fist team offense, which are no slouches.

24 Points in One Game: Even though this is the preseason this is still something to be excited about. If I remember correctly the Chiefs only scored 34 points all of last preseason and that resulted in an 0-4 preseason and 4-12 regular season. So, we’ll see what happens.

Derrick Johnson: He seemed to be everywhere. I don’t remember exactly when it was, but he read a screen perfect and blew up the play resulting in little or no gain for the Bears.

Dwayne Bowe: Although he didn’t play much he was still impressive. He caught everything thrown at him and picked up yards after the catch. And that no-catch that was ruled incomplete in the first quarter… Please! The replay clearly showed he got both hands under that ball.  I don’t know how he is able to twist his body and adjust to makes plays like that, but he is one of the best I have seen at doing that in a recent memory.

As you can guess there were also a few things that didn’t impress me so much.

WHAT I DIDN”T LIKE

The Second Series: I guess after that first offensive series at least a slight letdown is to be expected, but come on guys!  I expected a little more than that! The blocking up front seemed to get worse and the penalties killed us.  I expect this to improve because those are things that can be worked on.

The Defense: Giving up 20 points to the Bears offense is not something to be proud of. I mean their QB’s are Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton… enough said.

Missed Blocks: I saw quite a few but one that sticks out to me was when Adrain Jones (pretty sure it was him) was pulling and didn’t get there in time and LJ got blown up in the backfield.  I understand this is the first game of the preseason so get your stuff worked out and bring it on in game one of the regular season!

Training Camp Recap: Tuesday, 8/5 AM Practice

August 5, 2008 by bigknoxy · Leave a Comment
Filed under: KC Chiefs Football, News

Here is the usual recap of this mornings practice.

A little from Gretz

The Chiefs had just 24 plays of team work and the offense had positive plays on 11 of those snaps. QB Brodie Croyle found TE Brad Cottam for a nice gain down the middle. QB Tyler Thigpen had a bootleg that turned  a run for 10-plus yards.  Both Croyle and Thigpen found WR Maurice Price for nice gains  The offense again used the direct snap to a running back as Jamaal Charles took the snap.  Damon Huard was the quarterback on the play and he lined up at wide receiver.

A few hits about the Offense:

Running back Jamaal Charles took a few snaps with the first string, but worked a lot with the second string. Charles took a pitch from quarterback Tyler Thigpen and bounced it outside for a nice gain, causing Head Coach Herm Edwards to take notice and yell: “That’s the way to run 2-5!”Running back

Larry Johnson was also in action and showed his force as he took a handoff and ran over rookie tight end Brad Cottam en route to a 15-yard scamper.[UW-RF]

A few hits with the Defense:

The NFL Network had some crewmembers at practice this morning. A cameraman, a reporter and an additional crewmember were present.Fullback turned linebacker Oliver Hoyte rotated in with the second string today.

During 11-on-11, linebacker Derrick Johnson showed good coverage. He broke up a pass from quarterback Brodie Croyle to tight end John Paul Foschi. Later, fellow linebacker E.J. Kuale leaped into the air to get his hands on quarterback Tyler Thigpen’s pass. Kulae didn’t make the interception, but he deflected the ball enough to create an incompletion. Rookie defensive end Brian Johnston applied some pressure to Croyle, and the play would have been charted as a sack had the situation been game-speed. Later, Thigpen was pressured by several members of the defensive line. He threw a pass to wide receiver Sergiori Joachim, but the ball was broken up by safety Jon McGraw.[UW-RF]

And now the special teams:

The tempo was slow as the special teams unit worked on the kickoff cover and return game. The cover team wore yellow skull caps. It worked on getting through and by the wedge to pick up the returner. “Men work on your technique. Get your hands inside, bend you knees,” said Special Teams Coach Mike Priefer. Kickers Connor Barth and Nick Novak rotated taking kicks from the 25-yard line. Running backs Jamaal Charles, Dantrell Savage and kick return specialist B.J. Sams took turns on the return. Defensive end Tank Tyler, center Wade Smith, tight end Brad Cottam and fullbacks Mike Cox and Chris Manderino came out as the first cover team.[UW-RF]

Training Camp Recap: Monday, 8/4 PM Practice

Bob Gretz thinks the Chiefs had a great practice and that Chan Gailey is starting to show off a little..

With the conclusion of the afternoon practice, the Chiefs finished up their best day of practice work in training camp. And we also saw the first signs of the mad offensive scientist that is Chan Gailey.

more from Gretz:

Other noteable moments of this practice: Charles took a pitch and ran right and when defensive containment broke down, he was off to the races … in team work DE Tamba Hali, DE Jason Parker and S Khayyam Burns had sacks … CB Brandon Flowers had an end zone interception … QB Brodie Croyle had the nicest pass of the day, hitting WR Maurice Price deep. Price beat CB Maurice Leggett … Savage had a couple nice TD runs in the scoring zone … TE Brad Cottam caught a TD pass from Croyle as well … Nick Novak was 2 for 3 and Connor Barth was 3 for 3 on field goals. Both hit from 50 yards.

A little bit from UW-RF

Looks like one of our rookies made a good impression:

When the defense and offense came together on Ramer Field, Head Coach Herm Edwards was pleased with the performance of rookie cornerback Brandon Flowers. Edwards complimented Flowers on several occasions. One time, he said, “Good job, 2-4. That’s the way to not panic,” when Flowers showed good coverage on a wide receiver attempting to make a big grab.

Looks like we are trying some new things on offense.

The first-string offensive line was missing its regular left side during the 11-on-11 drill. Offensive guard Brian Waters sat the practice out and rookie Branden Albert is nursing a sore foot. In their places were tackle Herb Taylor and guard Tre Stallings. The offensive line struggled with the first three plays as running back Larry Johnson was stuffed behind the line of scrimmage on every play. But on the fourth play the offense split quarterback Brodie Croyle out wide left and Johnson took a direct snap off left tackle for a crowd-pleasing big gainer.

Training Camp Recap: Friday, 8/1 PM Practice

Chiefs training camp

As usual I’m going to go through some training camp coverage and provide you with links.

Looks like Dwayne Bowe is really going to be a force this year.

PLAYS OF THE DAY Dwayne Bowe against Tyron Brackenridge was definitely a mismatch, but even so, the young cornerback stayed with the receiver down the field. Brodie Croyle still fired the ball into tight coverage, but purposefully threw behind his favorite target. Bowe twisted his body around, plucked the ball out of the air and fell backwards out of bounds, keeping his feet in for a gain of about 11 yards. Sometimes, there’s just no way to defend a pass, especially when it’s headed for Bowe.Occasionally, Brodie Croyle looks like he’s headed to the Pro Bowl – particularly when he throws on the run. Today, off bootleg action, Croyle zipped another ball down the sideline to Bowe. The pass was so well thrown, placed perfectly outside Bowe’s right shoulder, that there was no way anyone else could have caught it. Had the ball been placed in front of Bowe’s left shoulder, the completion might have ended up out of bounds. [WPI]

Some more from WPI regarding who is hot and who is not:

    WHO’S HOT
OK, yes, Bowe is hot. He was again all over the place today, and is clearly in no danger of a sophomore slump. He’s constantly using his body to shield the ball from defenders, and his hands look incredibly strong. I’ll be shocked if Bowe comes up short of 1,000 yards again.

Give it up for Brad Cottam, who caught everything thrown his way today. That hasn’t always been the case here in River Falls. Cottam’s last catch of practice drew praise from Head Coach Herm Edwards.

    WHO’S NOT

Is Tamba Hali really capable of playing right defensive end? I expected him to beat Herb Taylor over and over again today, but Brodie Croyle had plenty of time on most snaps. There was more pressure coming from the middle and right side of the offensive line, or from blitzes. If Hali can’t get the better of John Tait next week against the Bears, the Chiefs may have a problem.

Donnie Edwards (hamstring), Kolby Smith (groin), Branden Albert (foot), Brandon Flowers (hip), TJ Jackson and Jackie Battle sat out the afternoon’s practice.

Also, yesterday was Chiefs DT Glenn Dorsey’s Birthday, for which his teammates got him a cake. Happy Birthday Glenn Dorsey from all of us.

Training Camp Update Day 6 - 7/30 AM

chiefs-training-camp-11

I am getting to point where I am getting really anxious to see how the scrimmage against the Vikings turns out. Now, here is some of the highlights of this mornings practice, which will not include Bordie Croyle or LJ. Both of them sat out as the coaching staff decided they needed a rest.

Bob Gretz talks about roster for a second:

One roster note: the Chiefs had an open spot and with their shortage of defensive ends, they are bringing back Jonal Saint-Dic, a rookie free agent out of Michigan State.  He was released at the end of the team’s off-season program.

a small feud among the players

Things also got a bit chippy, as the boys are tired of hitting each other. DT Tank Tyler and G Tre Stallings went at it in the 9-on-7 drill. Later in the team work there was a good battle involving LB Pat Thomas, RT Damion McIntosh and Dorsey.

and a little about Gunther and the defense

Gunther Cunningham was upset with his linebackers. He gave Thomas, who is running with the first team at middle linebacker, an earful. He pulled rookie LB LeRue Rumph off the field at another spot. Once the action got flowing, Thomas made some plays, He stopped RB Jackie Battle for a 2-yard loss and then shut down a screen intended for RB Jamaal Charles. LB Donnie Edwards and CB Brandon Flowers had interceptions. S Jarrad Page dropped an INT.

Warpaint Illustrated had some good coverage as always. Here are their plays of the day.

    PLAYS OF THE DAY
Alfonso Boone might not be the quickest defensive end in the NFL, but he looked like one of the strongest on one play this morning. Brad Cottam was way out of his league trying to block Boone, who shoved the tight end yards deep into the backfield, and moved laterally to blow up a running play. Cottam had absolutely no chance.Tyron Brackenridge is fighting with Dimitri Patterson and a few other young players for spots on KC’s roster because the Chiefs drafted two cornerbacks last April. Today he showed up big time, smacking Dantrell Savage across the middle in 11-on-11’s with the second team. Brackenridge’s hit dislodged an ill-advised pass attempt intended for Savage.

Oliver Hoyte turned to face his quarterback and cleanly caught a short pass. As he turned around, Rashad Barksdale came screaming up to make a tackle, but there was one problem – he tried to tackle the 6-foot-2, 250-pound Hoyte high. Barksdale got flat run over.

Jamaal Charles carried out his play fake on the bootleg and paused at the line of scrimmage before turning upfield. He caught Tyler Thigpen’s pass cleanly, and needed only one block to find open field before he turned on the jets. There wasn’t a football player in Wisconsin who could have caught him.

and who they think is RED HOT:

Pat Thomas was simply all over the place this morning. In 11-on-11’s he penetrated to bring down a running back for a loss, and was part of a wrecking crew that blew up a screen pass. Later, Thomas pursued Tyler Thigpen on the bootleg and forced him out of bounds for a negligible gain. Finally, Thomas locked up on tight end Tony Gonzalez on another bootleg attempt, and stuck to him like glue before slapping away the ball. If you ask me, in one practice, Thomas showed up more than Napoleon Harris has all camp.Donnie Edwards is still an ageless wonder. He’s moving around like he’s in his prime, and today he made two plays on the football, tipping an interception to Brandon Flowers and snagging one of his own in the left flat.

The first-team defense really looks ready for the Vikings tomorrow night. They repeatedly stuffed running attempts early in practice and the secondary swarmed over receivers. There’s a reason Tyler Thigpen and Damon Huard had such a terrible morning practice.

Don’t forget to check out the videos on the front page and UW-RF’s coverage.

Training Camp Update Day 5 - 7/29 PM

chiefs-training-camp-9

It seems like the Chiefs are really getting into the swing of things now.  That is a very good sign with the scrimmage against the Minnesota Vikings tomorrow. As usual I fill in excepts from the various training camp coverages.

From kcchiefs.com

Plays of the Day: Rookie RB Jamaal Charles took a handoff, cut to his right and blasted through a hole for a 75-yard score during the team run period. Coach Edwards had his offense positioned on its own 25-yard line to start the series when Charles went to the house.Coach Edwards set up the line of scrimmage 75 yards from paydirt and gave his charges 40 seconds to get into scoring range. QB Brodie Croyle led the first unit offense, hitting WR Devard Darling on a quick slant for a score.

Finally, QB Tyler Thigpen the second-unit offense during the two-minute period. The second-year signal caller from Coastal Carolina led the offense 50 yards down the field to the end zone. The series included a 25-yard scramble Thigpen and a 10-yard touchdown connection to rookie TE Brad Cottam to punctuate the drive.

Look Who’s Talking: “These last two practices – I know it, you know it, we got better“
-Head coach Herm Edwards addressing the team after practice

Here is little bit from Mr. Gretz. He seems to getting excited about the offense. (YES!) Hope it carries over.

And score one for the offense! Chan Gailey’s unit had their best practice of the training camp to date. One can almost see the light bulbs going off over the heads of some of the offensive players as they go from day-to-day. The basic Gailey offense is not very extensive and that’s all the team is working with right now. So they should get better at execution each practice because they’ve run these plays before.

and look who is running with the first team D.

Also, Pat Thomas was running with the first team at middle linebacker. Napoleon Harris ran with the second team. In the action, Demorrio Williams kept showing up and making plays. Jarrad Page was back in action after dinging his knee yesterday, but he dropped an interception.

I wouldn’t make too much of this at the moment, but if Thomas continues to run with the first team late into camp then you never know. As far as I am concerned if he is the best they put him out there.

Now a D Bo and Glenn Dorsey update from Warpaint Illustrated

WHO’S HOTDwayne Bowe simply keeps getting open and making plays. Today the second-year receiver was all over the place, and even when he didn’t catch the ball, he impressed. To start 11-on-11’s, Bowe toasted Patrick Surtain for what looked like a sure long touchdown, but Brodie Croyle overthrew the pass. Later, Bowe again victimized Surtain down the field despite tight coverage, going up to catch a purposefully underthrown ball from Croyle for a gain of about 25 yards. Bowe did drop a pass toward the end of the session, but he’s consistently showing up day in and day out. Now I’ve got to check out his blocking.

Glenn Dorsey is learning fast. Today, he was part of the reason KC’s first-team offense really struggled to run the ball, especially at the beginning of practice. On the second snap of 11-on-11’s, the rookie destroyed an attempt by Larry Johnson. Later, Dorsey blew past Brian Waters, ran down Johnson from behind in the backfield and despite quite an effort from the running back to break free, Dorsey would not let go and recorded a tackle for loss.

Glad to hear Dorsey is learning quick. Even if it was just once, if he is blowing past Brian Waters he is doing something right.

Ok, that’s all for now but don’t forget to check out UW-RF and Red Zone for some more coverage.

Renovations at Arrowhead - Home of the Chiefs

June 26, 2008 by bigknoxy · Leave a Comment

I was lucky enough to go to a Kansas City Royals game this last weekend. Incidentally it was the one loss they have had in their last ten games, but it was also the night of “the biggest firework display in the history of Kansas City” so that was cool (and I posted a few videos of the show on youtube if anyone is interested).

I know what you are saying now, “Why do I care?” Well, while i was there I was able to snap a couple photos of some of the construction going on for the renovations at Arrowhead, and if you are like me you are interested in this sort of thing. The photos I took were of what I think are going to be the new office building, but if someone knows for sure please let me know.

Without further a due here are the pictures (plus a random Arrowhead picture or two as a bonus).
