So the Chiefs really have traded Tony Gonzalez…

Jay Glazer broke the story:

The Chiefs have agreed to trade the perennial Pro Bowl tight end to the Atlanta Falcons for a second-round pick in the 2010 draft, FOXSports.com has learned.

(Sigh…)

Gonzalez has already spoken to both the Chiefs and Falcons about the deal, according to sources.

So for the best TE ever the Chiefs get a second round pick NEXT year(2010).

So much for Clark Hunt saying the Chiefs didn’t want to trade Gonzalez.

Here is what Clark Hunt had to say today:

“On behalf of my family and the Chiefs, I want to thank Tony for his time in Kansas City,” Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt said. “Over the last 12 seasons, Tony has been one of the finest players in Chiefs history, and he will always be remembered as a member of the Chiefs. His play on the field speaks for itself – he holds almost every major NFL record for tight ends, and he is arguably the best to ever play his position. We wish him the best in Atlanta.”

And here is what Scott Pioli had to say:

“From an organizational as well as personal standpoint there are mixed emotions. I have the highest personal and professional respect for Tony and consider him to be a future Pro Football Hall of Famer.”

Honestly I understand this move, the Chiefs got a second round pick for a player that only has a few years left… but why do I still feel TICKED?   Also I think it would have been a lot better if they got a second round pick THIS year because bottom line for this season the Chiefs get nothing for Gonzo…

Well… I wish you all the best Tony, you will always be a Chiefs to me and one of my all time favorites.

Chiefs will Keep Tony Gonzalez; Not Sure on Larry Johnson and Brian Waters

Clark Hunt

I know it has been so crazy with Chiefs news lately that we haven’t really been able to keep up (ha ha) but Adam Teicher has provided us with some news thanks to his talk with Chiefs owner Clark Hunt.

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said Monday during a break at the NFL meetings that the Chiefs had decided to hold on to Gonzalez, their longtime Pro Bowl tight end. Hunt also said decisions regarding Johnson and Waters haven’t been made but added that either or both could return to play for the Chiefs this season.

So on the surface I am really happy, at least about the part where Clark says we are keeping Tony Gonzalez, maybe Tony G has seen that the Chiefs are heading in a different direction now and wants to be a part of it. But… I can’t help but think this just could be the Chiefs talking the talk, e.g. so they can up Tony’s trade value and if a really sweet deal did come along take it.

Now, with that said why would it make sense in trying to up Tony’s trade value while not making the same about Waters and LJ?  I could understand saying you don’t know if you will trade LJj because honestly his trade value isn’t much right now, but with Waters you would think it would make sense to try to up his trade value (if you really are trying to trade him that is). Maybe the Chiefs staff is trying to send Waters (and other Chiefs players) a message that no matter who you are one player is not great than the team.

Personally I hope we can keep Gonzalez, Waters and even give LJ a shot with the new staff (maybe their no-nonsense approach will be good for him).

Go Chiefs!

Chiefs Offensive Leaders

February 19, 2009 by The Low Down with Ryan Lode · Leave a Comment
Filed under: KC Chiefs Football

There is a distinct possibility that not a single 2008 statistical leader for the Chiefs offense will either be with the team or start in 2009:

Offensive Leaders

Passing Yards: T. Thigpen 2608

Passing TDs: T. Thigpen 18

Although Thigpen played well in 2008 he has yet to prove himself under center in a base NFL style offense.  There is a good chance he may not be the starting QB in 2009.
Rushing Yards: L. Johnson 874

Rushing TDs: L. Johnson 5

Obviously LJ wants out of town, and frankly if we can get any sort of value out of him I’d be surprised.  A mid round pick, salary dump and one less whiny RB would be motivation enough to trade LJ.  With the massive overhaul of the front office this off season though, I could see Pioli/Haley convincing LJ to play out at least one more year and see how he fits into the new schemes.
Receiving Yards: T. Gonzalez 1058

Receiving TDs: T. Gonzalez 10

I know it’s hard to imagine the Chiefs trading Tony, but it’s a real possibility too.  If we can get a 2nd round pick, or a 3rd plus change, I’d say we do it.  TG deserves the chance to win a Super Bowl and we could most definitely use the extra draft picks.  Although it’d be sad to see him go, it may be best for both parties involved.

Tony Gonzalez named to AP All-Pro Team.. again!

The Associated Press: AP All-Pro Team includes 15 newcomers.

Kansas City tight end Tony Gonzalez made his fifth All-Pro team. Gonzalez ended his 12th season owning the triple crown of NFL career tight end records: receptions (916), yards receiving (10,940) and TDs (76).

“I wanted to show everybody that I could still play at a high level, that I could still be a leader,” said Gonzalez, who certainly did that with 96 catches for 1,058 yards and 10 TDs for a 2-14 team.

Congrats to Tony Gonzalez!  Tony you are the MAN and definitly one of my favorite Chiefs (and football players) of all-time. Thanks for working hard on our 2-14 team Tony G.

Congrats! Two Chiefs make the Pro Bowl

I just wanted to say congratulations to Tony Gonzalez and Brian Waters for making the Pro Bowl this year.

Tony Gonzalez will be making his 10th consecutive appearance while Brian Waters will make his 4th appearance. As we all know Tony Gonzalez dominated all other TE’s this season (great comparison article at Arrowhead Pride) and Brian Waters help a line was worst in the NFL last season move up to being the 14th best rushing offense in the NFL.
Great work boys! Please continue to do your best and teach these younger guys about life in the NFL.

:) Go Chiefs!

Napoleon Harris News

Getting lost in the shuffle this week between all the Tony Gonzalez and Larry Johnson news was some news concerning former Chiefs LB Napoleon Harris.  Yes, that’s right, I said FORMER. Harris was cut by the Chiefs after they were unable to trade him prior to the trade deadline on Tuesday.

It is also being reporting that Nap Harris has found a new/old home. According to The Viking Age:

Napoleon Harris will serve a second tour of duty as a Vikings linebacker after signing a contract for the rest of the season. Harris began the year with Kansas City but was unable to crack the depth chart for whatever reason - this after a 2007 campaign which saw him lead the Chiefs in tackles.

Nap will now be reunited with former Chiefs Jared Allen and Benny Sapp(Attack).
I still wonder how the Chiefs couldn’t get anything for him (even a 7th rounder?) and then the moment he is cut he draws interest from at least two other teams. Oh well… Whatever, right…

Trade Update: Tony Gonzalez still with the Chiefs

I have not heard anything for the last little bit and now that the trade deadline has come and gone I think it is safe to say that Tony Gonzalez is still a Chief. Whew…

< Here is a link that confirms(Gonzalez stays with the Chiefs) >

I understand Tony G’s point of view here and the Chiefs could definitely use all the draft picks they can get, but deep down I’m a somewhat selfish who is happy that Gonzalez is still with the team.  Sure, I could have dealt with it, and understood, if he was gone, but this makes it so much easier.

:)

I wish the best of luck Tony,  you and the rest of your Chiefs will definitely need it the remainder of the season.

What do you guys think about this whole situation?  (or any other Chiefs that didn’t get traded)

Tony Gonzalez Trade Update: Buffalo Bills Offer A 3rd Round Pick

October 13, 2008 by bigknoxy · 3 Comments

Reports are now saying that the Buffalo Bills have now offered a 3rd round pick for Tony Gonzalez.

From the Buffalo Bills official blog:

With NFC East rivals Philadelphia and the NY Giants in the running for Tony Gonzalez’s services via trade it could drive up the price for the perennial Pro Bowl tight end. WarpaintIllustrated.com, a team outfit under the Scout.com umbrella is reporting that the Bills have offered a third-round pick for Gonzalez.

Meanwhile they’re reporting that the Giants are willing to offer more than their original offer of a 6th round selection. If Philadelphia and the Giants start competing with one another naturally the asking price goes up, which could make things more difficult for a team like Buffalo if they are in fact a part of these trade talks, which has not been confirmed by One Bills Drive to this point.

If nothing else this should start the bidding war for the services of our great, future Hall of Fame Tight End. I still stand by what I said before: I would absolutely HATE to see Tony Gonzalez go to another team, but he if does the Chiefs better make sure they get something worthwhile for him, don’t just give him away for the sake of it.  Yeah, he is a little old but if he can turn your team into a legit Super Bowl contender (or favorite) for a year or two, how can you put a price tag on that?

Tony Gonzalez to be Traded? Maybe to the Giants?

October 11, 2008 by bigknoxy · 1 Comment

So there has been lots of talk about the Chiefs and a possible trade of Tony Gonzalez.  I have said before that maybe we owe it to Gonzalez to play for a contender, but as it possibly gets closer to actually happening I am developing a pain in my stomach. I would understand it if Tony G wanted to play somewhere he has a chance at the Super Bowl but I would absolutely HATE to see him in another uniform.

Here is some of the “news” that is being reported about the possible Tony Gonzales trade from around the net:
Jay Glazer has this to say about the Tony Gonzalez trade:

If they can find a trade that would work for all parties, it would actually be quite honorable for a team executive to not hold a player hostage in his final years on a rebuilding team. Get something for him to assist with the rebuilding process. He’ll forever be loved in KC regardless.

The Giants are the perfect fit as they’d provide Eli Manning with one of the most reliable targets in the league. Between Gonzalez and Plaxico Burress, their red-zone threat would be downright scary. The Giants should take the second- and fifth-round picks they got for Jeremy Shockey’s trade and offer them to the Chiefs for Gonzalez. Shockey for Gonzo? Who doesn’t do that?

If I were the Giants and Chiefs offered me Gonzalez for the same 2nd and 5th round picks that they got for Shockey I would take that in a heartbeat. Gonzalez, although older, is a MUCH better (more complete and injury free) TE. IF the Chiefs make this trade I would hope they would get more than that for him. Don’t get a Shockey for giving a Gonzalez (future HOF’er and best TE EVER).

Pro Football Talk: Tony Gonzalez traded to Giants?

A reader tells us that KSHB in Kansas City is reporting that Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez has requested a trade, and that one of the teams in the running is the New York Gootball Fiants. (It’s an inside joke that you’ll understand only if you check the site every day, multiple times per day.)

Though we haven’t confirmed that KSHB is reporting this information, we’ve learned separately that, indeed, an effort is afoot to move Gonzalez out of Kansas City.

So who knows what or if any of these rumors are valid, but you never know.
Remember when I wrote this article:Does Tony Gonzalez want to be Traded? ? Tony G say that since it could take a few years that maybe the Chiefs should see what they could get for him and ship him off.

The trade deadline is October 14 at 4:00 p.m. EDT. We should all know something by then.
