Training Camp Recap: The Final Practice-Thursday, 8/14 Practice
Well, it has been fun following the Chiefs through training camp at River Falls. I really wonder if this will be their last year there. Personally I would love if they did it locally so I could go watch them whenever I wanted, as apposed to taking time off to plan a trip to River Falls (which I would like to do at some point if they do continue to have camp there).
Anyway, here is some of the stuff that went down in the Chiefs final practice of the year at River Falls:
- The Chiefs ran 24 plays of team work and a much less intensive pace than they’ve used lately. Some highlights included a nice dump off pass from QB Tyler Thigpen to RB Kolby Smith … both Smith and RB Jackie Battle took direct snaps from center, and the defense is catching on as neither run broke for big yardage … [Bob Gretz]
Are the Chiefs working KR Sams at WR now?
- KR B.J. Sams has worked in individual drills at WR, but got little work in team action. But he caught a nice pass from QB Damon Huard on a third-and-7 play that moved the sticks. Sams beat CB Tyron Brackenridge [Bob Gretz]
Don’t forget about the new rule changes guys!
- a QB Brodie Croyle pass to WR Dewayne Bowe deep in the end zone was caught by Bowe, but he couldn’t get his feet down. Bowe cried that he was pushed out, but the head coach reminded him that a rules change this year eliminated the force out. [Bob Gretz
But Bowe made up for it later in practice:
- Plays of the Day: WR Dwayne Bowe made several solid catches in today’s practice, including a touchdown in the back of the end zone on a pass by QB Brodie Croyle. Bowe tip-toed the back line as he was shoved by a defender, ever mindful of the new revision to the “push rule.” The WR got two feet in bounds and counted the TD for the offense. [kcchiefs.com]

Training Camp Recap: Wednesday, 8/13 PM Practice
Rivers Fall… the end is getting near. Although the Chiefs will practice today, their workout yesterday afternoon was their last practice of training camp with full shoulder pads and contact but the Chiefs players were still up for the workout:
- They turned in a very spirited session. Although the contact is supposed to be minimal, these guys are going so fast right now it’s hard for them to turn down the tempo. At one point in the practice, RB Larry Johnson got upset with DT Tank Tyler for a little extra contact and let him know about it. Tyler just looked at him and smiled. RB Jamaal Charles didn’t like being roughed up on one play, and he ended up throwing the ball at a Chiefs defender. [Bob Gretz]
I hope Charles doesn’t do that in a game because if he does that is a 15-yard penalty.
Gretz also talked about some of the better plays in practice.
- Some other plays to remember: Croyle hit TE Tony Gonzalez on a bootleg where he threw a pretty pass on the run … TE J.P. Foschi, who is fighting for a roster spot, completely blew a play where the pass was thrown deep to him by QB Damon Huard, but he never looked for the ball and it fell incomplete … S Bernard Pollard had a big hit on RB Kolby Smith in space … Huard hit WR Dewayne Bowe on a pretty double move down the right sideline for a touchdown over rookie CB Maurice Leggett, who didn’t get deep help from Tyron Brackenridge … Hustling DE Tamba Hali made a tackle on a screen pass to the other side of the field, fighting through numerous attempted blocks. [Bob Gretz]
A Glenn Dorsey update:
- DT Glenn Dorsey got his regular ration of 10 to 12 plays. Head coach Herm Edwards said the Chiefs would decide on Saturday whether the No. 1 pick would play against Arizona at Arrowhead Stadium. [Bob Gretz]
Yesterday’s plays of the day from kcchiefs.com:
- Plays of the Day: WR Dwayne Bowe showed some separation late in practice with a beautiful out-and-up route that fooled two defenders and ended in a touchdown. QB Brodie Croyle helped matters with a pump fake on the “out” then threw a perfect touch pass down the right sidelines into Bowe’s waiting hands.
During “Hammer Time” Croyle rolled to his right on a bootleg, scanned the defense and threw a bullet to WR Maurice Price. Price caught the ball on the line, then lunged toward the field to stay in-bounds and kill clock. He was successful and was rewarded with a tap on the back of the helmet from Croyle.

Training Camp Recap: Tuesday, 8/12 PM Practice
The Chiefs’ time in River Falls is starting to run very short as they will be heading back to KC this Friday. Will this be there last time in River Falls? We will probably find out sometime this fall, but for now here are some updates from training camp.
I don’t know if this is a testament to the defense of offense:
- The Chiefs defense turned in a pretty good practice on Tuesday, as the Chiefs offense had the turnover bug.The guy who got all the action was rookie S DaJuan Morgan. He picked off QB Tyler Thigpen on a pass for WR Will Franklin. Later, he recovered a fumble by RB Jamaal Charles. As Charles ran to his right, he lost control of the ball without being hit. Not a good sign. [Bob Gretz]
Some more from the Gretz man…
- Offensively, the Chiefs had great success all three times they ran the play where the running back takes the direct snap from center, with the quarterback lined up as a wide receiver. All three came on third down plays and Larry Johnson, Charles and Dantrell Savage all got enough to move the chains. [Bob Gretz]
Did Barth hear that Feely was available or what? I don’t recall him having a day like this before.
- The kickers worked in this practice and it was not a good day for Connor Barth. The rookie was just 2-for-4, missing wide right from 30 yards and wide left from 35 yards. He made 40 and 45-yard FGs. Nick Novak was 3-for-4, missing wide right from 40 yards. [Bob Gretz]
Also, don’t forget to check out the lnks below for more news from Tuesday night’s practice.

Training Camp Recap: Monday, 8/11 PM Practice
Another day of camp is done and here is some of what happened.
The Chiefs D-Line of the future made an appearance. Could it be here to stay?
- For several plays during the workout the No. 1 defensive line looked like this, from left to right: Turk McBride, Tank Tyler, Glenn Dorsey and Tamba Hali. That foursome had probably a half-dozen snaps, as the Chiefs were easing Dorsey back into full practice work coming off his knee injury. [Bob Gretz]
It looks like the offense is continuing to click as well.
- Offensively, the nicest play was a bomb from QB Brodie Croyle to WR Dewayne Bowe down the middle that would have gone for big, big yardage in a game. Also, RB Larry Johnson had a nice blitz pick up on one passing play. WR Jabari Arthur had a nice catch and WR Maurice Price did as well. [Bob Gretz]
Is Barth starting to move ahead on the depth chart?
- The kickers worked Monday afternoon, with rookie Connor Barth making all three of his field goal attempts, while Nick Novak was two for three. [Bob Gretz]

Training Camp Recap: Sunday, 8/10 PM Practice
Another day of camp for our Chiefs drew to a close. The Chiefs had back from River Falls this Friday and I’m sure lots of them will be happy to back in the friendly confines of Arrowhead.
Not a lot to report about camp today, but here is what I got:
It looks like Gunther is trying out some new things with the defense… maybe he will whip this out a critical part in a game to confuse the other team.
- When the workout came to its final session, the two-minute drill, Gunther Cunningham unveiled a new wrinkle to his 3-3-5 defense to throw against the offense. He had Tank Tyler, Brian Johnston and Jason Parker on the line, with Pat Thomas, Derrick Johnson and Demorrio Williams at linebacker and five defensive backs.
But Williams has lining up as a defensive end and rushing the passer off the left side. He was unstoppable as RT Damion McIntosh struggled to slow him down. Williams showed great speed and great leverage as he went low, forcing McIntosh to bend his knees, which he does not do well. And for whatever reason, this all seemed to light a fire under Johnston. Largely silent throughout this training camp, suddenly the seventh-round pick was boring in on Brodie Croyle as well. [Bob Gretz]
A little more from Mr. Gretz
- It was a fairly short workout, as the team ran just 32 plays of teamwork on the afternoon. The offense did not turn the ball over and won their share of the snaps. The defense had several sacks and a couple near interceptions. On 13 snaps inside the defense’s 15-yard line, the offense scored just once on a burst through the left side by Larry Johnson.[Bob Gretz]

Chiefs drop CB Poole and pick up OL Shackleford
When I watched the first preseason game against the Chicago Bears I wasn’t too impressed with CB Will Poole and apparently neither were the Chiefs. It appears the Chiefs thought enough of him to cut him and then bring back a player they already cut in the Spring workouts.
- In Shackleford, the Chiefs are getting a big body. The 365-pound Shackleford was with the Chiefs during their spring workouts but released before the start of camp.[Red Zone]
Although Shackleford is probably just here to provide an extra body on the offensive line until Branden “Phat” Albert (HEY HEY HEY!) is back on the field.

Training Camp Recap: Wednesday, 8/6 AM Practice
Well, I don’t know about you but I am so happy that the Chiefs have a game tomorrow! Even if it is just a preseason game it will be nice to get to see the Chiefs in action against another team and judge them based on that.
Here is your much need dose of training camp info.
The Chiefs took it easy today while preparing for their first preseason game against Chicago tomorrow:
- For about 90 minutes under a warm Wisconsin sun the players worked on special teams and situational calls. It’s a chance for the coaches to double check whether the players have been paying attention and whether they can react quickly on the field. [Bob Gretz]
As far as playing time for the Chicago game it looks to shake down something like this:
- As for the quarterback rotation, starter Brodie Croyle will work into the second quarter. He’ll be replaced by veteran Damon Huard and then Tyler Thigpen will likely get most of the second half. Edwards wants Thigpen on the field with the young offensive line because of his mobility.
Larry Johnson will get about 20 to 25 plays and he’ll touch the ball five or six times. [Bob Gretz]
Oh and it looks like the following players will not even make the trip to Chicago because of injury: LB Donnie Edwards, DT Glenn Dorsey, LT Branden Albert, RB Kolby Smith, DE Trevor Johnson and WR Kevin Robinson.

Training Camp Recap: Tuesday, 8/5 PM Practice
Hey everyone. Another day a training camp is behind us. Here are some updates from the Tuesday afternoon practice. I will be referring to the following links in my quotes.
I am beginning to run out of words to use to describe Dwayne Bowe.
- PLAY OF THE DAY
Dwayne Bowe simply cannot be stopped if the ball is in his general vicinity. Today, a Brodie Croyle pass wasn’t even intended for Bowe, and yet it still wound up in his hands. Croyle fired a high throw over the middle for Devard Darling, who jumped, only to see the ball skip off his fingertips. Jarrad Page’s diving attempt at an interception came up empty handed, but not far behind was “The Bowe Show,” which dazzled the Ramer Field crowd with a highlight-reel catch.[WPI]
Some more from WPI
- WHO’S HOT
I see something in defensive end Jason Parker. He’s not nearly as built as Turk McBride, or even Tamba Hali, but he might be the fastest of the Chiefs defensive ends. Today Parker was spotted working at left defensive end with some of KC’s starting defense, and to be frank, he dominated Barry Richardson, who couldn’t handle his quickness. Parker lacks ideal size, but he might have skills similar to Indy’s Robert Mathis.
I hate to get anyone’s hopes up, but I don’t think I saw an incomplete pass from Brodie Croyle this afternoon. Dwayne Bowe bailed him out a couple times, but as Herm Edwards might say, “That’s ball, now.” The Chiefs were sending the blitz after Croyle this afternoon and he didn’t appear too fazed by it. I’m leaving River Falls extremely excited about Brodie Croyle.
WHO’S NOT
Tyler Thigpen is a great athlete, but his accuracy may prevent him from reaching his potential. His throws are constantly high, and even when he does make a play, it seems like it’s street ball more often than not. Today in the two-minute drill to end practice, Thigpen appeared to underthrow Bobby Sippio, who looked open for a touchdown, in the corner of the end zone. The pass was picked off by rookie safety DaJuan Morgan
Here are some position battle updates.
- Here are a couple of position notes based on how the players get on the field during practice. Right now at cornerback they looked like they are ranked in this order: Brandon Flowers, Pat Surtain, Brandon Carr, Dimitri Patterson and Will Poole. Tuesday afternoon’s No. 2 defense was Turk McBride/Derek Lokey/T.J. Jackson/Brian Johnston across the front, with LeRue Rumph/Wes Dacus/E.J. Kuale at linebacker and then Carr and Patterson with DaJuan Morgan and Jon McGraw at safety[Bob Gretz].

Training Camp Recap: Tuesday, 8/5 AM Practice
Here is the usual recap of this mornings practice.
A little from Gretz
- The Chiefs had just 24 plays of team work and the offense had positive plays on 11 of those snaps. QB Brodie Croyle found TE Brad Cottam for a nice gain down the middle. QB Tyler Thigpen had a bootleg that turned a run for 10-plus yards. Both Croyle and Thigpen found WR Maurice Price for nice gains The offense again used the direct snap to a running back as Jamaal Charles took the snap. Damon Huard was the quarterback on the play and he lined up at wide receiver.
A few hits about the Offense:
- Running back Jamaal Charles took a few snaps with the first string, but worked a lot with the second string. Charles took a pitch from quarterback Tyler Thigpen and bounced it outside for a nice gain, causing Head Coach Herm Edwards to take notice and yell: “That’s the way to run 2-5!”Running back
Larry Johnson was also in action and showed his force as he took a handoff and ran over rookie tight end Brad Cottam en route to a 15-yard scamper.[UW-RF]
A few hits with the Defense:
- The NFL Network had some crewmembers at practice this morning. A cameraman, a reporter and an additional crewmember were present.Fullback turned linebacker Oliver Hoyte rotated in with the second string today.
During 11-on-11, linebacker Derrick Johnson showed good coverage. He broke up a pass from quarterback Brodie Croyle to tight end John Paul Foschi. Later, fellow linebacker E.J. Kuale leaped into the air to get his hands on quarterback Tyler Thigpen’s pass. Kulae didn’t make the interception, but he deflected the ball enough to create an incompletion. Rookie defensive end Brian Johnston applied some pressure to Croyle, and the play would have been charted as a sack had the situation been game-speed. Later, Thigpen was pressured by several members of the defensive line. He threw a pass to wide receiver Sergiori Joachim, but the ball was broken up by safety Jon McGraw.[UW-RF]
And now the special teams:
- The tempo was slow as the special teams unit worked on the kickoff cover and return game. The cover team wore yellow skull caps. It worked on getting through and by the wedge to pick up the returner. “Men work on your technique. Get your hands inside, bend you knees,” said Special Teams Coach Mike Priefer. Kickers Connor Barth and Nick Novak rotated taking kicks from the 25-yard line. Running backs Jamaal Charles, Dantrell Savage and kick return specialist B.J. Sams took turns on the return. Defensive end Tank Tyler, center Wade Smith, tight end Brad Cottam and fullbacks Mike Cox and Chris Manderino came out as the first cover team.[UW-RF]

Training Camp Recap: Monday, 8/4 PM Practice
Bob Gretz thinks the Chiefs had a great practice and that Chan Gailey is starting to show off a little..
- With the conclusion of the afternoon practice, the Chiefs finished up their best day of practice work in training camp. And we also saw the first signs of the mad offensive scientist that is Chan Gailey.
more from Gretz:
- Other noteable moments of this practice: Charles took a pitch and ran right and when defensive containment broke down, he was off to the races … in team work DE Tamba Hali, DE Jason Parker and S Khayyam Burns had sacks … CB Brandon Flowers had an end zone interception … QB Brodie Croyle had the nicest pass of the day, hitting WR Maurice Price deep. Price beat CB Maurice Leggett … Savage had a couple nice TD runs in the scoring zone … TE Brad Cottam caught a TD pass from Croyle as well … Nick Novak was 2 for 3 and Connor Barth was 3 for 3 on field goals. Both hit from 50 yards.
A little bit from UW-RF
Looks like one of our rookies made a good impression:
- When the defense and offense came together on Ramer Field, Head Coach Herm Edwards was pleased with the performance of rookie cornerback Brandon Flowers. Edwards complimented Flowers on several occasions. One time, he said, “Good job, 2-4. That’s the way to not panic,” when Flowers showed good coverage on a wide receiver attempting to make a big grab.
Looks like we are trying some new things on offense.
- The first-string offensive line was missing its regular left side during the 11-on-11 drill. Offensive guard Brian Waters sat the practice out and rookie Branden Albert is nursing a sore foot. In their places were tackle Herb Taylor and guard Tre Stallings. The offensive line struggled with the first three plays as running back Larry Johnson was stuffed behind the line of scrimmage on every play. But on the fourth play the offense split quarterback Brodie Croyle out wide left and Johnson took a direct snap off left tackle for a crowd-pleasing big gainer.
