From Mitch Holthus
- Wow…good long tough practice. I like the way the team approached the 4-3 inside run drills. Its obvious they want to be a physical team.
- Watching special teams work with 15 year long snapper Kendall Gammon is like talking computers w Bill Gates. Drill today he wanted 4 8yrs
Updates from Gretz at CBS Sports
- Activated from the NFI List and participating in Chiefs practice are G Brian Waters, G Mike Goff and DT Ron Edwards.
- Starters who aren’t in Chiefs practice on Sunday are RT Damion McIntosh and ILB Derrick Johnson.
- Chiefs coach Todd Haley is spending extra time in practice with wide receivers working on body control coming out of breaks.
- WR Devard Darling is running with the Chiefs’ No. 1 offense opposite Dwayne Bowe.
- Chiefs TE Brad Cottam had a Tony Gonzalez-like catch down the deep middle, snagging it with one hand over his head.
- Chiefs K Ryan Succop was 4 for 4 in field goals.
- Chiefs G Brian Waters struggled in pass protection against NT Tank Tyler.
- Chiefs WR Rodney Wright had a nice catch on a deep ball under good coverage.
- Chiefs ILB Zach Thomas knocked down a pass in deep zone coverage during the 7-on-7 drill.
- Chiefs OLB Tamba Hali showed good pass rush off the edge against the first-team offense.
- Chiefs LT Branden Albert on the return of guards Brian Waters and Mike Goff to practice: “It was great having the two wisemen back.”
- Chiefs coach Todd Haley on why he spent extra time in Sunday’s practice with the team’s wide receivers: “We’ve had guys on the ground and the receiver is no good to anyone if he’s laying on the ground. Whether it’s the right shoes, improper technique, whatever, a wide receiver cannot be on the ground and help you win in any way, shape or form.”
From UW-RF Staff
- Before practice officially began, Defensive Coordinator Clancy Pendergast was working with the defensive backs, running a drill that used five garbage bins to simulate the offensive line. During this drill, cornerback Maurice Leggett was seeing time as the nickelback.
- One of the defensive coach stood on the back of the single sled while the defensive linemen worked on tackling. Defensive Line Coach Tim Krumrie continued to ask the men to “jam it” and “keep [their] head up.” Krumrie made defensive tackle Tank Tyler hit the dummy multiple times until he was satisfied with Tyler’s “jamming.”
- Seeing time with the first-string during 7-on-7 was: defensive ends Alfonso Boone and rookie Alex Magee, defensive tackle Ron Edwards and linebackers Monty Beisel, Zach Thomas, Tamba Hali and Mike Vrabel.
- Frustrated due to the defense’s weak showing versus the running offense during 7-on-7, Defensive Line Coach Tim Krumrie shouted, “Don’t let him push your (butt) off the ball. You push him past the line of scrimmage!”
- 11-on-11 began. Seeing time with the first-string was: linebackers Tamba Hali, Zach Thomas, Mike Vrabel and Monty Beisel; cornerbacks Brandon Carr and Brandon Flowers, safetiesBernard Pollard and Jarrad Page, defensive ends Alex Magee and Alfonso Boone and defensive tackle Ron Edwards.
- After quarterback Matt Cassel completed a pass to wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, Defensive Coordinator Clancy Pendergast said he expected more out of linebacker Tamba Hali. “Finish, Tamba,” he shouted.
- Running back Kolby Smith, tight end Jake O’Connell and tackle Damion McIntosh were not suited up for practice this afternoon. GuardsBrian Waters and Mike Goff were both in full pads for the first time today.
- Off a good handoff from quarterback Tyler Thigpen during 7-on-7, running back Jackie Battle fumbled the football. This was much to the dismay of Offensive Line Coach Bill Muir.
- Running back Dantrell Savage had a good run off a handoff from quarterback Matt Cassel during 7-on-7
- Head Coach Todd Haley was getting on quarterback Matt Cassel for his play-action fake during a half-speed scrimmage against the offensive reserves. “[We need a] good sell, good sell! If we are going to run those, Matt, we need a good sell!”
- Quarterback Tyler Thigpen looked really sharp in his 7-on-7 session. Thigpen was 6-6 on the day.
- Chiefs President Denny Thum was present at this afternoon’s practice.
So there you have it Chiefs fans. Stay tuned, more updates are coming.

Chiefs Offensive Leaders
There is a distinct possibility that not a single 2008 statistical leader for the Chiefs offense will either be with the team or start in 2009:
Offensive Leaders
Passing Yards: T. Thigpen 2608
Passing TDs: T. Thigpen 18
Although Thigpen played well in 2008 he has yet to prove himself under center in a base NFL style offense. There is a good chance he may not be the starting QB in 2009.
Rushing Yards: L. Johnson 874
Rushing TDs: L. Johnson 5
Obviously LJ wants out of town, and frankly if we can get any sort of value out of him I’d be surprised. A mid round pick, salary dump and one less whiny RB would be motivation enough to trade LJ. With the massive overhaul of the front office this off season though, I could see Pioli/Haley convincing LJ to play out at least one more year and see how he fits into the new schemes.
Receiving Yards: T. Gonzalez 1058
Receiving TDs: T. Gonzalez 10
I know it’s hard to imagine the Chiefs trading Tony, but it’s a real possibility too. If we can get a 2nd round pick, or a 3rd plus change, I’d say we do it. TG deserves the chance to win a Super Bowl and we could most definitely use the extra draft picks. Although it’d be sad to see him go, it may be best for both parties involved.

Thigpen wins the WTF? Award
Yes, you read that corectly… our very own Tyler Thigpen was nominated and WON this protegicous award! And no, it’s not what you think… here is a little bit about this award:
Since the Pro Bowl’s pretty much a “Who’s the most famous?”contest, I believe that the NFL needs an award to recognize guys who were once thought of as scrubs (if they were even thought of at all) and emerged from obscurity to have a fantastic year.
I call it the Who’s This Fellow? Award … or for short, the WTF? Award. Since the league has thus far rebuffed my attempts to establish the Vinny Testaverde Award, we’re taking another shot with this one.
You can get all of the rest of the story here: Tyler Thigpen wins WTF award.
Good job Thiggy!

Tyler Thigpen and the Spread Offense
I decided to try and figure out what Tyler Thigpen’s QB rating is ever since they started running the spread offense (his first start against the Jets). I’ve always felt his QB was skewed from that first game against Oakland and the start against the Falcons with that old offense but I had no idea it was THIS different! For the record, his QB rating for the entire season is 76.9, which isn’t great. But check out these numbers since the spread has been employed:117 for 193 with 1347 yards and 11 TDs and 4 INTs for a QB rating of 92.0As it stands right now, that would be 7th best in the NFL and above Cutler.
Thanks for sharing James.

The Final Whistle - Post Game Thoughts: Chiefs vs. Chargers
Hope everyone had a great weekend, sorry for the delay on the Final Whistle. I want to start off this week talking about how excited I am that Herm went for two. Sure the Chiefs lost yet another close battle, but the confidence that he showed in his team is going to have long term effects. I know you may think that the Chiefs didn’t have much to lose sitting at 1-7 and on the verge of 1-8, and you are probably right. Though Herm showed confidence in his young team, and as a young player in the NFL that has to be a great feeling. With the defense down and out, he put the game in the hands of his offense and better yet his young quarterback. Which I think is safe to say was the right decision, and one Herm would later say that he would make 100 out of 100 times.
I still can’t seem to wipe the smile off my face at the Chiefs rapid improvement, for the first time this year I was on the edge of my seat screaming at the T.V., praying for a Chiefs win. Not a win for you and me, but a win for our team in the red and gold. For those young players who have yet to experience much success in the NFL. I remember after the Carolina game when I went on and on about wanting to see more heart from the Chiefs, and these last three games they have showed me more than enough. Herm does deserve some credit for getting his team up and ready to play week in and week out, especially considering the circumstances. These last three games the Chiefs could of very easily won, with a play here and a play there we would be feeling a lot better about our young team.
I am starting to believe that Tyler Thigpen could be our diamond in the rough. I would like to see him get some wins before the end of the year, and I firmly believe that he will. He has really but a shot in the right arm of this offense, as well as the whole team. If he can continue his sold play I believe he is exactly what this team needs to win not only now, but in the future. One of the things that I have been most impressed with is his poise throughout the course of a game, he never gets to high or to low, qualities that are hard to find in a young quarterback. I have to admit that I have been having fun watching these young Chiefs lose these past three weeks, because I know we can only go up from here and the future is looking bright through these Chiefs fans eyes.

Around the Chiefs Blogosphere & No Brick Hits this week
I just wanted to let all of my loyal listeners know that there will be no Brick Hits this week. Brick decided to take a week off. I guess it is a good thing we decided to do the Brick Hits Special Edition- Chiefs vs Jets Post Game.
So now I will leave you with a few other Chiefs links for today.
Primetime over at Arrowhead Pride seems to agree with me that the Chiefs rushing D is running out of excuses and that Cunther is to blame.
- What has changed? Nothing! I’d say Gunther’s [in]ability to stop the run is becoming more apparent. What’s the excuse this time?
Adam at Arrowhead Addict is starting up some New Rules for the Chiefs
- You can’t slap women around if you refuse to pass block.
You can’t slap women around period, but what kind of pansy abuses women yet tinkerbells around when relied on for pass protection? Larry Johnson, real men do two things: A.) The dirty work; and B.) Never abuse women.
I totally agree with this and I can’t believe I never put these two together. If you can’t pass block then you should should let woman hit YOU!
Quinn Gray is now the Chiefs #2 QB. He is almost just sitting there waiting for Thiggy to screw up so he can get his chance.
- Herm Edwards said after practice that Quinn Gray, signed only last week, would move into the number two quarterback spot on the depth chart with Ingle Martin moving back to number three. The change will take effect with Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay at Arrowhead Stadium.
Bob Gretz also did a nice piece on good ole’ Marty Schottenheimer. I know that I sure wouldn’t mind having him back.
- “They love you again in Kansas City,” somebody shouted at Schottenheimer this past Sunday. He was at Giants Stadium in the New Jersey Meadowlands, watching the Chiefs and Jets play.
“I will always have great memories of Kansas City, Arrowhead, the Chiefs fans,” Marty said.

No Daunte For Chiefs: Culpepper visit to KC has been cancled
Photo from ESPN
Bob Gretz is reporting that Daunte Culpepper will not be visiting with the Chiefs after all.
- The Chiefs have canceled a visit by QB Daunte Culpepper to Kansas City on Tuesday and will move on with Tyler Thigpen as their quarterback.
Culpepper was scheduled to visit the Chiefs facilities for a workout and physical, but the plug was pulled on that visit Monday afternoon.
I just hope that the Chiefs canceled this meeting with Culpepper for a legitimate concern and not just because Tyler Thigpen had ONE great game (in which we lost).
Overall, Quinn Grey brings some of the same things Culpepper does to the table, but he has also never produced at a pro bowl level in the NFL like Culpepper has.
I’m just hoping Thiggy keeps playing lights out (or just consistant) and this all becomes a moot point.

The Final Whistle - Post Game Thoughts: Chiefs vs. Jets
Our beloved Chiefs suffered a gut wrenching 24-28 defeat by the right arm of Brett Favre at Giants Stadium. Favre drove the Jets to a game winning score with just under 1:00 remaining in regulation. Though the loss is tough to swallow for the red and gold I am feeling good about the overall performance of our road warriors. You can’t say enough about the play of young QB Tyler Thigpen, I believe he temporarily silenced critics with his impressinve stat line of 25/36 for 280 yards and two touchdowns. His most impressive line of the day was the fact that he didn’t turn the ball over, he gave us a chance to win.
Though the defense stuggled yet again with giving up the big play, see Leon Washington, they did intercept Brett Favre three times. Two of those take aways going to rookie cornerback Brandon Flowers, one of which he returned 91 yards to pay dirt. Some noticable moves for the Jets game was Tamba Hali moved back over to his left defensive end spot, and Gunther spent the day on the sidelines rather than in the booth. I like both moves Tamba recored a sack late in the fourth quarter, plus Gunther was able to communicate with his young defense throughout the course of the game.
Though the loss pushed the Chiefs record to 1-6, it was promising to see improvement from the previous week. We can’t forget just how green this team really is, and it’s going to take time before they become contenders. The only thing I want out of the Chiefs each week is that they compete, and if they are in games late in the fourth quarter that is an added bonus. Some may say I have gone soft in terms of expectations of our Chiefs but I like to be realistic, and progress is all we can look for with our team from Arrowhead Dr.
Today was a step forward, and these are grounds the Chiefs can definitely build on. I am looking forward to next weeks game and hope to see similiar though slightley improved production from both our offensive and defensive units. I expect to see a competitive Chiefs team battle Tampa Bay, but hopefully the final outcome will be different.

Daunte’s Latest Inferno and Gettin’ Thiggy with it
It is being reported that the Chiefs have contacted Daunte Culpepper twice this year. Once was right after the season opening shoulder injury to Croyle and Culpepper said he didn’t want to come back in a ‘fill in’ role. The second time was this week and Culpepper said something to the effect of he was happy after he looked at his financial portfolio and coaching his son’s youth football team. It looks like he may have changed his mind.
Culpepper is his own agent and sent out the following email to the media:
- “A number of teams have contacted me since my retirement announcement and have provided some important information that has caused me to reconsider returning to the league. As much as I have enjoyed my brief break from playing, I know that I love the game and I have some unfinished business in the NFL. It has never been because of a lack of passion for the game but rather the absence of a fair opportunity to complete and play that caused me to retire.”
“Now that there are some real opportunities that match my desire to play, I will choose the one that is the best fit for both the team and me so that I can continue my NFL career. For the second half of this season, I hope to play a role in helping a team win some games. I want to thank all of those who encouraged me to ‘keep a light on’ for the right NFL opportunity that would eventually come back to me.”
This really makes me wonder if Culpepper is considering signing with the Chiefs. I really hope so. I think Culpepper could come to the Chiefs and play for a year or two and the Chiefs could still draft a young QB to develop.
This is a situation that could benefit both parties. If nothing else, Culpepper gets an extended audition for other teams to prove that he still has it and it gives the Chiefs young QB’s a former pro-bowl player to study under. That situation seems ideal to me.
Now, it news about a QB that actually will be wearing red this Sunday, the Chiefs want Tyler Thigpen to be “careful”. Most people would say that is probably because Herm doesn’t want to have to start QB #4 on the year… and that looks to be the case (although I would bet that a fourth QB will start for the Chiefs before this season is over, maybe 5).
- The Chiefs want Thigpen to run and make plays. They just don’t want him to do it recklessly.
“He’s got to be careful,” coach Herm Edwards said Thursday. “His instincts are to run. We don’t want him running a lot because if he’s down, we get to (quarterback) No. 4.
“This is hard enough.”
Anyone giving out odds that we will see Ingle Martin take a few snaps this week? Before you do remember, for whatever it is worth, that Thigpen, unlike some other Chiefs QBs, has actually started and finished a game this year.
Good Luck Chiefs!
